Taking a Look at the New Hive Keychain V2

avatar

Yesterday Hive Keychain got an upgrade on all supported browsers.

I thought I should overview it, after taking a look at the new features and using it for a day or so for current operations.

First of all, the new design is way cooler than the one for the previous version. :)

image.png

I also love there is no need to click OK after every submitted transaction, and that the popup is on timer and auto-closes after a few seconds.

@stoodkev mentions in his presentation of the new version, which are the new features:

Complete list of wallet transactions (filterable)
All Hive Engine operations (staking, delegations, etc.)
Governance tab
Dynamic RPC handling
All the settings can now be exported as a file

I might have not poked around Hive-Keychain much outside the regular operations lately, but I found another cool option I didn't know about. I'll tell you about it later. But for now, let's go over the new features.

Complete list of wallet transactions (filterable)

That's what you get from History:
image.png

and it looks like this:

image.png

When you expand filters, you have these options:

  • search by sender and memo (using the search box); really nice!
  • filter in or out operations
  • filter operations by type

image.png

All Hive Engine operations (staking, delegations, etc.)

Your Hive-Engine wallet and operations are accessible from tokens:
image.png

I surprisingly have a fraction of LEO in this test account, enough to show you what is what in there.

image.png

  1. Token (LEO in this case) transaction history
  2. Send
  3. Extends/Reduces options - that's where you find the 'Stake', 'Unstake' and 'Delegate' buttons and info about balance, stake, delegations sent or received.
  4. Shows a list with all the HE tokens and you can choose which ones to display and which ones to hide, individually.

Governance tab

Now, we could already vote for witnesses from the previous version of Keychain. So, what's different?

First, you access it from here:
image.png

And you get to this popup:

image.png

I don't remember if there is anything changed when it comes to voting for witnesses or setting a proxy compared to the previous version (it doesn't look like it is), but now you can vote for proposals from the keychain too.

image.png

Practically you can do all governance-related ops from this page (both witness voting and proposal voting).

Dynamic RPC handling

I suppose this is related to this option in the Advanced Settings, which allows auto-switching of RPC nodes when checked.

image.png

I don't know if this setting is checked for you or if I did it previously, but if it isn't, I'd advise you to check it, unless you know what you are doing.

All the settings can now be exported as a file

You can do that using the Import/Export Settings option in the Advanced settings.

It is useful if you want to port the same settings to a fresh installation of Keychain on another browser/computer.

Note that this doesn't export the accounts you have added to Keychain.

For that you'll need to go to Settings -> Accounts -> Export. And then do the same except use Import instead on the other device/browser.

What else I discovered for the first time?

This may be around for a while, but I didn't check the settings in a long time.

In the Automated Tasks at the User Preferences level, you can auto-claim accounts, if you have enough RC. That's pretty cool.

image.png

I like the new Keychain. How about you? What has been your experience with it so far?

I also started auto-claim accounts.

That's a cool addition. I often forgot to claim mine.

I had some small issues with the new Keychain, so just a small heads-up for others...

  • If you have an old version of Chrome or Brave, you should update them...
  • try to clear the cache of your browser if you have issues...
Thanks for the review! I didn't poke around but it's nice to see that we have literally ALL that we need INSIDE the extension!

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project and it will be highlighted in the next post!

Thanks for the tips! I checked and my Brave browser is up to date. I experienced some issues yesterday viewing comments on Leofinance, but this doesn't seem to be keychain-related. They fixed it now, it seems.

An excellent update. Thanks for doing a detailed review. The auto claim on accounts is terrific. It is a nice feature.

Thanks, Task! Yep, auto-claiming accounts is awesome! I bet most people forgot to do it.

Thank you for giving us a new overview of the Keychain! My first impressions so far are that the updates are fantastic! And your mail about it on Listnerds (and this post) reminded me to take some time to play around and get familiar with everything new lol!😊

I haven't taken a good look at the keychain's features in quite some time. It's possible the claim accounts thing I mentioned at the end has been around for some time. So if we don't look, we miss out.

Thanks for your kind words!

I really like the filters in the wallet history. I also like how easy it is to support a proposal now right within the keychain.

The Auto-claim for Rewards and Claim Accounts has been there for a long time; that's one of my favorite features!

I took yesterday off and I haven't done enough with keychain yet today to experience all of the changes, but I like it so far!

I knew about the auto-claiming of rewards, but maybe when I checked Automated Tasks last time I didn't have enough RCs on the account where I was, so maybe Claim Accounts was hidden. It's the first time I remark it.

Good point, this is it exactly. On my personal account it doesn't show but on my business accounts it does.

It's practically an all-in-one toolkit for Hive and Hive-Engine now. All wallet and governance options, as far as I can tell.

No complaints here :)

I didn't notice any bugs either.

There is one thing though. When I delegated some Hive Power, with the new interface I don't see a way to delegate the max available, whereas in the previous interface that was possible.

I don't really know what really changed that much and I checked my User Preferences but I don't see the claim accounts. I guess I need to get enough HP to claim accounts to see this option.

Yes, you need enough RCs to be able to claim at least 1 account. That was around 5k HP at some point, but it fluctuates.

The additions to the new interface are listed in the post and I went through each of them.

Most of us use the keychain primarily for blockchain ops.

One little thing that I don't like is when you click the extension icon it does take a couple of seconds to load the window, every time. This wasn't happening before. It might not even be a bug, maybe that's just how they designed it...
