Hardfork Is a Moment in Time

avatar

Congratulations! We are officially in the Hive Evolution territory!

Hivefork 26 happened at precisely 12pm GMT. (that was 3pm my time, as you can see below)

image.png

All this impressive work and testing were put together by some of the smartest people on this blockchain for over a year, for 3 seconds in the spotlights. Enough time to generate a new block and switch from version 1.25.0 to version 1.26.0, where the consensus of block producers (witnesses) was.

Most people didn't even realize hardfork happened, because there was nothing to notice, initially. If the hardfork is successful, you won't be aware of it right away. If there is something terribly wrong, then it will become obvious.

After the hardfork time passes, and you get a confirmation it happened (like I did from the official channel up there), you can start to poke around and see if the changes that come with the hardfork really work.

But even then it might be too soon.

Because to prevent any potential issues during or immediately after the hardfork, you will notice some services and apps (or parts of apps) may not work properly for a while.

They'll slowly come back to normal operation on the other side of the fork.

Some operations that are newly introduced with the hardfork may not have support in the apps yet, even if they work as intended at the core level.

This is the case for RC delegations from Hive Evolution, which was one of the most expected new features of HF26. Even if it seems to work as intended at the core level (or if you broadcast the custom json yourself - see an example in the screenshot below), the interfaces don't have RC delegations support added already, although they are working on it.

image.png

It's too soon to say that the hardfork was flawless. Bugs can be found even a week after the hardfork happens. But it was most likely the most tested hardfork from the history of Hive (including its legacy), and I wouldn't be surprised if there really aren't any significant issues discovered post-hardfork.

I already experienced some very quick operations. Probably the one-block irreversibility has something to do with it. Optimizations the Blocktrades team made in different parts of the core code surely has an impact as well. I can't wait to see if that has an influence on the speed of transactions on Hive-Engine too. When dealing with lots of operations, especially related to diesel pools, a speed improvement would be fantastic. Since they are custom jsons on Hive, and if their speed was increased, I don't see why that wouldn't reflect on the speed of transactions in HE.

This was a major fork. We don't even realize how big yet. But we will.

Happy Fork Day, Everyone!

Happy fork day to you too! Last few hard works worked out smoothly. HIVE developers have learned their lessons from all the mishaps we faced during our STEEM days.

I agree! I don't remember a Hive fork that went wrong. Much better testing and the mirror testnet they used this time is very powerful.

Thank you for the great information. If I read enough posts like yours maybe I will start to understand the technical aspects of the blockchain.

If the tech area is not your thing, don't try too hard. There are many other things to do that don't require knowing the technical aspects of Hive.

Happy hard fork day!!! I noticed a bit of issue while trying to claim rewards through ecency interface. Initially I thought it was my pc so I tried to clean the cache and restart browser, yet it continued.

And honestly, Hive Engine really need a boost in terms of spead.

Is this before or after the hardfork? Before the fork, I had such occurrences too, with some transactions on the keychain that didn't work because of timeout.

Do you have the same issue all the time, or it happens once or twice, and then it goes through?

It was yesterday and this morning only, but I found the solution now. I had to logout from all the hive dapps and links, restart my pc then re-login and everything is working well now. Thanks for the follow up 😀 !PGM

Make sure you have RPC Node set to Switch automatically in Keychain Advanced settings, just in case, if you don't.

Hi, @gadrian.
I am unable to post my pictures on liketu but this could totally me LOL! I am having the most terrible time and have been trying to upload from my phone. This could be all because I am goofing up. I just got a new phone with more space upgraded iphone.
I can transfer from my phone to my computer and do the liketu on my computer desktop. It might be the best way for me to do. I know my iphone much better now but still not a pro at it.
Have a great day and evening!
Barb :)

Try from your desktop, but if it doesn't work it might be Liketu, which might have some issues for the time being. I don't use it, so I don't know.

Happy Hard Fork Day! A little wonky but generally all good

Yeah, I'd hold off doing something critical like big transactions, if that's the case until everything stabilizes. I haven't noticed anything at the blockchain level, but I haven't used it intensively either.

One of the smoothest hard forks in the history of HIVE... 😀 We had a small "pre-fork" crisis at Hive-Engine witness world, but that was fixed and it looks like everything works great! It's awesome to see that RC delegations also work, and I can't wait to see apps implementing them on frontends...

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project which will be highlighted in the next post!

I have to say I am not surprised by the outcome of the hardfork. I know these are tricky times and bad things can happen, but after following Blocktrades' posts over time and seeing the amount of testing they've done, my confidence level was very high. Especially that mirror testnet is pretty spectacular for testing in almost production conditions.

I was anticipating turbulence, but I didn't notice any.

There were some minor glitches for some low HP accounts based on the rebalancing of RC costs. But they'll get back to running order.

I wonder how shall I delegate RC to my youngest son's account.

We need to wait for that (unless you want to broadcast the custom json yourself). None of the interfaces were ready with this implementation...

I am hoping everything goes well and it's too bad that the RC delegations won't be ready right away.

Yeah, I was kind of counting on using them as soon as possible. But it looks like everyone expected someone else to take the lead on that. Tales of decentralization...

Yea but I wonder why it wasn't ready as soon as the hard fork happened. It's been discussed and the code was out but I guess the developers were busy doing their own things.

Thanks for the update, Adrian.
It appears to have gone rather smoothly.
I appreciate the information, as always.

Yes, generally, there weren't any glitches. Just some expected issues with some accounts with small RCs and probably a few nodes that came back up rather slowly after the upgrade.

Listnerds was a great way to find new posts during the hardfork period when enough services were down.
