The Big Stones

avatar

Life = B, T, D. B= Birth, D= Death
While T=Time

The above can be said to be a simple life formula, between when we are born till death and the Time in between. This time however comprises all our choice which in the very end determine the kind of life we live.

The only thing we all have in common whether rich, poor, happy, or successful is time. We all have the same 24 hours per day. What we do with our time is what defines us.

My lecturer once told us an interesting story about an experiment conducted by a time management life coach which stuck in my brain ever since then. I had tried to apply this in my daily activities and my life generally and the result has been effectively amazing.

This coach one day sat his participant on a role of chairs while he stood in front of a table facing them.

He brought out an empty jar and put it on the table, then put his hand under the table and brought out some numbers of stones.

He filled the jar to the fullest with these stones, looked at his participant, and asked them "is this jar full"? They all answered yes.

He said okay, he put his hand again under the table and brought out some gravel pour it inside the jar filling the empty side spaces the stones created. He then looked at his participant again and asked " is this jar full now"? They all looked at one another and said probably not.

He put his hand under the table for the fourth time and then brought out some sand to fill the space created by the gravel after this he brought out some water under his table for the last time and then pour it inside the jar filling any space left by the stone, gravel, and sand.

He looked up to his participant and said again, "in life, we have a limited time just like the space of this jar, and how well we can fill that time with our choice is what determines our life outcomes"

He likens the big stones to those most important things in our life, like our health, family, and well-being. Once all these are well in order than our career, business, cards, and social life which he likens to the gravels, the sands stand for other less important things that follow and so as the water.

Moral of his experiment

if we tackle life issues in other of how important they are, we will be able to make the best use of our limited time and things can easily fall in place.

In a life full of distractions left, right and everywhere we go, prioritizing our time can never be overemphasized in other to live a successful happy life.

In as much as we can easily get carried away, we must strive to be time cautious
As Life they say is very short.

I had heard about this story before, therefore, I have doubts if it really happened like this with your teacher. Although the message itself is very valid and valuable. We must take care of our life with all the good that fits in them. Nice post.

As Life they say is very short

short, but also sweet.

it's so important to know what we need to do because there's one thing that you can't get back which is time.
beautiful insight, well done

This is really clever.

What a great way to show such a nebulous construct, Time, in a very graphic way. Also... sage advice! How often we waste it on the small stuff!
