Hive needs better feeds! Let’s build a custom Curation tool! (part 5) [Ne

Discovery or curation tool?

The title of this series has changed from curation tool into discovery tool and now back into curation tool. Both the name as the intentions with the tool are changing along the way. But what's in a name when people find the tool itself useful. Because the developers called it curation tool, I'll just keep that in the title of these blogs as well.

New functions!

In my last blog in this series I announced the rebuilding of the Curation Tool by the developers (@ecoinstant & @thecrazygm). The first version of the tool was very basic. You could filter the blog posts of the past 7 days based on username, tag, community, title or some other variables.

I've started testing the tool right away and provided some feedback. I said that adding the option to add more than one of the same variable (for instance multiple tags) and the option to exclude certain tags would surely improve the usefulness of tool (at least, for me).
And just a short time later I received the following chat!
{F4BB69A1-1541-44BB-B0C2-9F0EA50EE6C0}.png

I've started testing it out and it worked like charm:

image.png

Luckily I'm not the only one asking for feature requests. Now I don't have to feel that they are building this tool just for me πŸ˜‚

image.png

@hafiz34 asked if it was possible to change the links to be opened by another front-end and in his case ecency.
It was just a matter of time before @thecrazygm introduced the hivel.ink by @cadawg, which allows links to be opened in a couple of different front-ends (and set this as your default.

The developers need your input to improve this tool, so please share your suggestions and change requests in the comments! And who knows, they might implement it.

Donations

The team mithril team that developed this tool works non profit. They build a lot of tools for the community. In my previous blogs I've done a fundraiser with which we collected $57.90 for the team to start building the tool.
I'm not continuing the fundraiser, but I do want to point out that these guys are developing this tool for free, so if you like the tool and, to speak with Eco's words; 'think it is worth money', please consider giving these guys a tip. You can do that with their own Tipping Jar Tool:
https://thecrazygm.com/hivetools/give/mithril.donation/2/HBD/Hive%20Curation%20Tool
You can change both the amount as the currency in the tool.

As I'm the one that has asked for this tool in the first place I've given another tip myself.
After my latest blog, a couple of other Hivers also donated something.

Mentions

I'm mentioning the people that have donated something to this project in the past to keep them informed about the latest updates of the tool.

If you want to be removed from this list, please let me know in the comments!

Use cases

I've been testing the Hive Curation Tool for a while now and I have found quite a couple of interesting use cases I wanted to share with you.

Community Compilation posts

I'm running my own community (The Hive Cycling Community) for which I regularly create compilation posts of all the interesting blog posts created in the community in the past week.

By making the following selection, I grab all those blog posts in one. I exclude the strava2hive tag because these are automated, actifit-like posts that I never add to the compilation posts.
Tag: -strava2hive
Community: hive-177745

Photography Posts

Photography is one of my favorite subjects. A lot of the posts I curate are related to photography.
Besides that I also like nature. By filtering on the Photography and Photography lovers community and adding the #nature tag I just get the posts I want to see.
Tag: nature
Community: hive-194913, hive-119845

image.png

My Photography contest

I'm also running my own photography contest. For this I've created my own tag: #fpc
By filtering on this tag and excluding my own posts I get to see all the contestants in the past week. This way I can easily find and upvote these posts and select a winner for the week.

Feature requests, bugs and comments...

So, I shared you some options on how I use the tool. I wonder if any of you already tested it out and maybe has some comments on how it works and maybe also has some features they would like to see being added...
I've shilled the tool in the HHH Discord Show by @ph1102 yesterday and @palomap3 had a nice suggestion:

image.png

Also @ladyaryastark replied to my last post with some features she would like to see. If I've translated it correctly the requests were a possibility to filter on the age of the account so you could show only newer accounts (to support new Hivers). Another request was to show the age of the post (1, 2, 3 days).
Finally she would like to see the option to filter on language. This one seems a bit difficult (if not impossible) since that is not a hard variable and many posts are multilingual, but I just drop it here.

I've also contacted Eco about how the multiple variables work. I assumed Tag:photography, nature would result in posts that had both the photography as the nature tag, but it seems that it collects posts that have photography OR nature tags. He's already looking into that.

So if you want to see anything added... just put it in the comments. I know @ecoinstant will check out this blog and the comments.

For now we have the following requests:

Just to make sure: Having your request on the list does not mean they are going to implement it.

UPDATE:
And/Or for tags has just been implemented!

I appreciate you a lot! Its an interesting activity - at the same time as we are building a cool tool that I think people want, and the ecosystem needs - we are also seeing if its possible to raise 100 dollars on chain without using the DHF!

Maybe @friendlymoose could publish a fundraising topic putting you as beneficiary, I won't do it because I will have only 1 dollar rewards πŸ˜†

I'm not against the idea of using beneficiary in general (I use them for many things), but I will say -

  1. its harder to track amounts (part of fundraising is tracking)
  2. @friendlymoose has donated more to this fundraiser than anyone else in monetary terms, PLUS he spent much of his time making these posts.

Thank you for including my suggestion, and I love the idea of filtering on the age of the account proposed by @ladyaryastark too.

I would like to be mentioned in nexts posts about the tool, I am in the list but the username is misspelled. Thanks for all the efforts and work to you and @ecoinstant! 😘

Keep playing with the tool and sharing your experiences!
It helps to improve the tool!

Yes! The and/or is implemented already.
This does look like ninja development, but Eco and I already discussed this yesterday on Discord.
But really fast development it is! Really cool! Thanks!

@cadawg links to your hive.link tool please? I am making an app and that would be fairly useful

Checked out the tool today -- works perfectly within seven days, and is beautiful! Good UX/UI, unlike a lot of the feed options on the front ends! Any chance we can get more than seven days? Those of us who have been on chain a few years and know others who have been on chain a few years would love to have that!
