Memories of an evening walk in Kuzguncuk, Istanbul

(Edited)

Earlier today I was reading a blog by @hoosie about his tour on the last day of his vacation to Istanbul. And that inspired me to look at my photos from our 2019 visit there. And while I've already shared a lot of information on Hive about our visit, there are a few tidbits of information I haven't shared yet. One of them was our quick walk one evening to a neighborhood of the city on the Asian side called Kuzguncuk.

We walked there from the Üsküdar port following the Bosphorus line. I remember it as a bit of a long walk between residential areas of the city. In this part, there were almost no tourists. It was already late afternoon, and by the time we reached Kuzguncuk, it was almost dark.

I wanted to visit this neighborhood because I had read that it was one of the favorite filming locations for Turkish soap operas and series.

And when you walk through its streets you realize how attractive it is. Some of the streets are narrow and cobblestone. It seemed to us that there was little traffic.

The houses and buildings are a few stories high and many cafes looked very cool.

We walked a little aimlessly through its narrow streets.

We also walked along Icadiye Street, the main street of the neighborhood. A street with some art galleries that were already closed at the hour. Also cafes and little stores.

We passed in front of the entrance of this church. Which I later discovered is a Greek Orthodox church called Ayios Yeorgios. And as a curious fact is right next to a synagogue because another interesting aspect of this neighborhood is that it is multicultural. Here has lived throughout history many minority communities in the country.

Here you will also find the late-night vegetable and fruit stands that are so common and colorful throughout the city.

In this neighborhood, the spots are small, like this butcher shop. I'm sure most of the people know each other.

I remember we stopped at a pastry shop for a Chai and a sweet. I don't have pictures of it, but we sat at one of those tables on the sidewalk that can be seen in the picture.

On the sidewalk across the street, in one of the businesses was this flashy car. It was a cafe and I wondered if they use the car to make deliveries. (Sorry the picture is a bit blurry)

Kuzguncuk is far from the tourist area of the city, but well worth a visit.

We did not eat there that day, although several places looked very nice. We had planned to eat fish in the Uskudar market, but I will tell you about that some other time. After finishing our Chai, we walked towards the Bosphorus until we reached the road that runs parallel to it. There we got on a bus that took us near to Uskudar Market.

And so was our short visit to Kuzguncuk.

This is my post for this week's #wednesdaywalk challenge hosted by @tattoodjay in collaboration with #makemesmile hosted by @elizacheng.

Cool neighborhood with narrow streets and little stores... always good to get off the tourist trail and discover a city without a destination.
Have a great day.

Thanks sis for taking us along with your long walk :) The place looks beautiful and quiet. People seems to be indoors early.
