Reflections On Life's Crossroads | Choices and Consequences

These days I've found myself reflecting a lot on the decisions I've made in life.

"You are the sum total of everything you've ever seen, heard, eaten, smelled, been told, forgot - it's all there. Everything influences each of us, and because of that, I try to make sure that my experiences are positive." ~ Maya Angelou

Let's change that quotation to the first-person pronoun:

"I am the sum total of everything I've ever seen, heard, eaten, smelled, been told, forgot - it's all there. Everything influences me, and because of that, I try to make sure that my experiences are positive."

Life is like a series of choices, big and small, that shape who we become. Looking back, I see that decisions are like building blocks, forming the path I'm on. I've made many major decisions in life, and one of them was deciding to quit my job 15 years ago and stay home to raise my kids. It was scary (an understatement), but it brought so many new opportunities and discoveries that taught me important things about myself.

Every decision, big or small, reflects who I am. Choosing to be true to myself, even when it's tough, paints a picture of my character. As I look at my life's picture, I see that every decision, even the small ones, adds a unique color to that picture. Some decisions were regrettable, and I endured the consequences, at times lasting for many years.

Decisions aren't just about me; they also affect the people around me. Recently, I had to make a significant decision, but after thinking about it for a while, I realized it wasn't solely about what I wanted. It would impact my family and friends. This made me think more about how my choices could make them feel.

In my family, decisions are like the glue that holds us together. For example, deciding to spend more time with family than working long hours changes the atmosphere at home. It's a balance between what I want and what makes everyone happy.

Making positive decisions is like spreading goodness in the world. When I choose to be kind and understanding, it strengthens my connections. It's like a ripple effect. Doing something good for myself can also bring happiness to others. On the flip side, a decision made without thinking can create many avoidable problems. I remember the bad choices I made in the past and how they had a significant impact on my loved ones. Those experiences taught me to be more careful with my choices in life.

So, whenever I face crossroads, I try to remember that each choice is a step, and every step shapes the story I'm telling. It's not just about me; it's about the people I share this journey with. My decisions are like threads weaving through my life, connecting everything. They're not just random; they create a pattern. It's a journey of discovering myself and figuring out how my choices impact the people I care about or those I meet along the way.

This was really emotional for me to read.
I used to think it’s my life it’s my choice until I realized whatever choice I make in life impacts the people around me too.
This was quite insightful to read.

Our choices often go unquestioned as we may believe the world revolves around us or harbor a sense of irresponsibility, assuming someone else will bear the consequences of our wrong decisions. Regardless of the life path we choose, it's crucial to take a moment for thoughtful consideration because our choices impact more than just ourselves. Btw, thank you so much for reading and commenting 😉

Quiting the job you work hard for years was indeed a tough decision. I am also soon as I wanted to take care my baby.

I felt worried at some point but reading your thoughts about it, helps a lot.

It was a tough decision and still tough. Some days I felt it was the right decision but some days I wondered did I made the right decision. There's no 100% sure answer because our circumstances change all the time. As kids grow, their needs evolve, often translating to an increased demand for financial resources which can be very stressful for one-income families. I wish you all the best in your future journey as a new mom.
