Deciphering the curation rewards algorithm on the Hive blockchain

avatar

Most of us that have been around this ecosystem know that the Hive blockchain has a unique rewards system that incentivizes users to curate high-quality content. The curation rewards algorithm is designed to encourage users to upvote posts and comments that are valuable, informative, and engaging. This not only benefits the content creators but also helps to improve the overall quality of the platform through curation. But not all of us know the formula that is used to award curation rewards, which I am trying to decipher in this post.

When a user upvotes a post or comment, they earn curation rewards. The amount of rewards they earn depends on several factors, including the size of the upvote, the time elapsed since the post was created, and the user's own voting power. The earlier the upvote, the higher the potential rewards, as the rewards pool decreases over time. Together with Hardfork 25, several changes were added to the curation rewards system as follows.

First, the 5-minute reverse auction went away, so there is no punishment for voting early. This has finally put manual voters on an equal footing with automated voters when it comes to competing for curation rewards. This change, more than any other, was the driving reason for the naming of this hard fork 25 as Equilibrium.

The early window or 24 hours since the content was created and upvotes are cast, will be rewarded based solely on their Hive Power and vote weight, and the reward curve applied from 24 hours to the end of the voting window will be much softer than currently, eliminating any need to feel rushed when voting in order to maximize curation rewards.

The mid window refers to another 24 hours from the early window 24 hours where the rewards curve is slightly softer with rewards going to early upvoters.

The late window refers to the end of the 7 days from the 48 hours, with the consideration that it contains also 12 hours of upvote lockout that is used in order to avoid wrong calculations since it would make it hard to compare vote power and rewards for votes cast within that extra-late window.

From all these details the best thing to do is curate fresh content for up to 24 hours to get the most out of it. Once with HF25, the curation rewards algorithm on the Hive blockchain became a more powerful tool for promoting high-quality content and encouraging user engagement. By incentivizing users to curate valuable posts and comments, the platform is able to create a more dynamic and engaging community. Furthermore, the algorithm helps to prevent unbalanced rewards distribution, while ensuring that the rewards are distributed fairly and transparently. As the Hive community continues to grow, the curation rewards algorithm will play an increasingly important role in shaping the platform's future.

I like the fact that it is a little simpler — and less stressful — than it used to be. I think there are more variables, though... my curations rewards range rather widely, even though I make sure to use my daily voting power that will recharge in 24 hours.

They've leveled the field between automation bots doing curation and manual curation. Things are simpler, clearly improved, and probably will be optimized in the future based on new models or analyzing behavioral data.

Curation is no doubt the back bone of this hive system, the more you reward other, the more you will get reward for your self. I was not aware of these voting windows, Your post is very helpful in understanding the concept of voting windows. Thanks for increasing my knowledge.

I like the switch over and it was good that the reverse auction was removed. I didn't realize there was an upvote lockout period though. Could this be different depending on the front-end?

It is very informative post for all of us, I think most of us didn't know about this voting windows system before reading this post. Thanks for sharing this kind of information with us.

Curation and engagement is the bedrock of every platform, the more active a platform is the higher the ranking, thanks for Sharing, will optimize my account now by curating early
