I lived in Fern Acres and Hilo for several years it’s beautiful but parts of Puna are the Wild West. It’s definitely a good place to garden but everything is growing all the time and invasive plants can become a nsusiance incredibly quickly.

I still have family in Waimea and Keaukaha, I married into a Hawaiian Portuguese family. Out Puna side their used to be an amazing farmers market is that still there?

Hello, @alohaed! That's wonderful, and yes, they are very lovely parts of the Island! Yep, living off grid in the jungle in Lower Puna has quite a lot of similarities to pioneer living in the Wild West. Because of the unpredictability of the lava, Lower Puna exists in quite a safe bubble, where there is very little governmental or corporate reach, so people can basically live as they want. I love it for that reason. Yes, the running joke is, that the best and worst thing about living here is that everything grows sooooo fast! My machete gets a lot of use!

That's cool to hear that you still have family on the Island, and about your wife's family! There are a few great farmers markets out here. Maku'u was by far the best and most visited, until they started enforcing masks for vendors and patron, then it died off a lot. The Kaimu/Kalpana Farmers Market has really been coming into its own, and it's pretty amazing now. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
