The Splinterlands season finished less than a day ago and I see plenty of posts about the season rewards that people received. Among these posts, I see a lot of complaining about the rewards. I only got these common cards. Why didn't I get a legendary card and if possible a gold foil?
Legendary cards are the stars in your deck but it's the common cards that do the dirty work. You need them and you should make sure that you get as many as possible to upgrade your deck.
Of course we all want these legendary cards, I'm the first one who loves when a reward chest is shaking before opening, signalling that a legendary card will pop up. From my experience with the game, I would like to tell the people who are sorry for not getting legendary cards, not to underestimate the common cards in the game. They are the gate to upgrading your deck.
A lot of beginners make the rookie mistake to sell the reward cards that they get, especially the common cards because they believe that these cards have no value. However this is far from the truth, especially at higher levels. Developing common cards to higher levels requires a huge number of these cards but since you get these cards in the game, they are a great way to start to upgrade your deck.
If you upgrade a rare summoner from level 1 to level 2, this will allow you to play common cards at level 3, rare and epic cards at level 2 and legendary cards at level 1.
If you combine now the common cards that you have to level 3, you can improve the quality of your deck quite drastically.
In the present reward series, I believe that the most powerful cards are not the legendary ones but the common ones.
This card combines the flying and the sneak ability. It attacks the last position of the opponent and is difficult to hit. At level 7 it has 3 attack and a speed of 5, which makes it a powerful weapon in any battle.
Another card with the flying ability but also the healing ability at level 6. This can be a very nice replacement for the Flesh Golem as a tank.
In my opinion this is the secret star of the new reward cards. With only 2 mana, you can put it almost everywhere. At level 7 it comes with 6 lives, magic reflect, flying and the divine shield ability. This can be a perfect tank card in a low mana battle.
As his name stipulates, it's a card that at first sight doesn't look very interesting. When you upgrade it to level 6 however it becomes a very powerful card: It has the flying and the backfire ability. When you combine flying, backfire and a speed of 4, it becomes that tank that kills without being touched! If you manage to increase the overall speed of your team, a lot of range and melee attacks will miss this card. Each time this happens, the attacking card will actually lose 1 life! A great card to play in melee only games. It seems however quite vulnerable to magic attack.

Hi @achim03! Reading your article earlier, I began to wonder about something weird that maybe you could answer. Take that Pelacor Cojurer. It's an awesome card to guard your rear in cases of Sneak attacks, for example. However, why does it need Speed at all? I mean, it doesn't attack. It only sits in there, waiting to be attacked. But the higher it gets it could even reach to 5 in Speed. Why? Let's say for the sake of the argument that it needs some speed in order to be used as a monster. Why not only 1 and stay like that until level 10? Am I missing something here? Thank you so much for your time to read this and keep writing these outstanding articles! Cheers!
That's a very good question and it might be worth to write a post about it :-).
The speed level determines two thing in a battle:
The more there is a speed difference between two cards, the more there is a chance the slower one misses the faster one. So if you have the Pealacor Conjurer in the last spot, as protection against sneak attacks, the more speed it has, the more often it will be missed by a less fast attacker. Combined with the flying ability, there are litterally tons of missed attacks. Therefore, as you say this card is perfect to be placed in last position.
That's pretty nice @achim03!!! I had no idea about the Speed function in that regard! Thank you so much for clearing that up to me! Now I can even understand why Kelp Initiate is so good!
This is the exact reason why the Pelacor Bandit is such a great backline tank. The speed + flying + sneak allows it to attack and @ 3 Mana, such great value.

To use a real life example, in nature there are preys and predators. And preys often get away by running or flying. That's why cards that don't attack still need speed, flying and sometimes passive ways to inflict damage to attackers.
Posts like this are super helpful to a Splinterlands novice such as myself. Do cards like this ever end up in the initial pack that one buys when they sign up to Splinterlands or are they mostly given as rewards?
The reward packs, the ones you get from daily quests or season rewards are a separate series of cards. You will not get them in any packs. You can only get them as rewards or buy them on the market.
Okay, thanks again, Achim! That's why I am reblogging these posts! 👍😀

100% not selling a darn thing... :-) i delegated a few to my daughter to play with... lol... but not selling. that being said, i had AWESOME luck in my 2nd season end yesterday (i'm new) and i got 2 yes TWO legendary cards.... i can't quite hardly believe it... My husband got one rare and greys... lol lol llol llol llol.
You got really lucky with two legendary cards! It's a very good idea not to sell the cards that you win. In the future, you will be happy to have kept them (I speak from experience lol).
Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for sharing. I keep all the cards I am rewarded and when I have enough, I level them up. However I have never received a summoner card. How is the best way to acquire them to start leveling up?
The summoners are the core of your team and it's the only cards that you can't really earn. You need to buy them. Either with your ingame earnings or with external money. The best is to actually start to develop one summoner to level 2. This will allow you to play cards of this level for this splinter if you are in bronze league at least.
This is the best way to progress. The next step is then to develop another splinter to level 2 and little by little develop your team.
Thanks for the advice. I guess I should probably pick a summoner from the new chaos or current rewards pack since they would be more readily available

Yeah I agree with this. Unfortunately, all I had was potions and credits, not a single card. Hopefully I have a better chance this season.
That is unlucky. But maybe you can start to buy some cheap reward cards with the credits that you win.
Great way to look at it @achim03 love the post have the best day
Thanks a lot for the feed-back! Wish a nice day as well!
Mercenary is my sneaky pick. I've been trying to level him up a lot over the past few weeks.
The mercenary is really bad ass. Healing and flying and shield in addition. It's really powerful at higher levels.
I've really come to enjoy this game thanks to your fantastic posts and videos that taught me how to play. Thank you! And I'm thrilled with any treasure chest I can get.
I'm very happy to hear that :-). I believe the game can be quite addictive once we start to understand how things work.
Nice advice for new player
The 4 Pelacor cards you mentioned are great cards and if upgraded can play well in advanced leagues as well.

Thanks a lot for stopping by. I believe that these common cards are often understimated. Especially by new players. It's also important to have a long term strategy and I believe it's a good idea to build up such cards for the long run.
Great advice Achim, we all need common cards, the more of them the better, so let's be happy about it, enjoy your day and stay awesome.

For the gameplay, it's the unnoticed cards that often make the difference, not the stars. From the investor's perspective, the airdrop or the collection power, the stars really shine. It's important that people see both sides, they usually get blinded by the shining stars, like in life.
I totally agree with you. It's nice to have the stars but it's the furious chicken or pelcor conjurer that make this little difference whether you win or loose a game.
