In Islam , a husband is called as a protector and a provider. So paying bills, buying house, fullfiling basic needs is what makes you a MAN. Otherwise I don't thinl anyone worthy enough to be called as a dignified Man if can't do all these basics.

Talking about Slaps: There is nothing regarding hitting your women. In the worst of the worst cases, you are allowed to slap your women with only Three fingers. Imagin slap with your three fingers? Or in some cases i have read slap equals to the intensity of MISWAK. MISWAK- a small piece of wood. And the conditions in which you are allowed, are far intense one not everyday conditions.

Talking about abuse, its is totally permissible. Not a man nor a women can abuse anyone. But unfortunately in Pakistan majority of the males only know that women can't abuse them but they can as they are superior to their wives. "Superiority" which they completely forget, on which basis they are granted this superiority to their wives.. BEING A PROVIDER & PROTECTOR.
