The best point from which to counsel is through covenant Theology because it gives us the "how" and the "why" of actual change. Politicians and businesses talk about changing your checkbook or your figure, Christian counseling deals with inner, intrinsic change. They don't merely ask "how do I change," but this forces us to answer the questions of why Christ died, why a Savior is necessary, and why did God approach us in the first place? God's covenants formal agreements/relationship with us, we can see that authentic change comes from God's tools which have been placed in our disposal and not from secular psychology and earthly tools. We cannot adequately facilitate a healing process until we grasp a distinct connection that God established to bridge the tremendous gap between us and Him.
The covenant speaks of a relationship between the Creator and His creatures, and that is why it is appropriate to start with the covenant in discussing change.
