Reading to memorize and reading to understand are two different terms.
I also experienced this!!, during my 300L in school, I learnt statistics on chalk board, I memorized formulas, I helped my colleagues by teaching them what I learnt. During my project year, when I am supposed to apply that knowledge to analyze my project, I was completely confused, I couldn't. That was when it dawned on me that I had actually memorized to pass. I had to start from the beginning to relearn everything.
