It's a bit of a tricky topic... Being a parent, and also a son, most of the things you described, I have lived in my life... My father had a bit of a hard temper, so I do remember getting physical punishments, despite that, in my opinion, my sister and I were good kids... On the other side, I know that I never hit my own child, but unfortunately, I did raise my voice a few times in his teenage years...

And on your question, why nowadays kids are different than those before, I would say it's a mix of different things... Family is the core of society, but society also can push things in another direction... Parents spend less time with children, and kids ask for instant gratification and even more attention than before... That combo of unfulfilled expectations creates bigger and bigger barriers...
