My Dad was never around and for me I had no-one to teach me and no one to take care of things.

I'm glad you figured things out and decided to take things into your own hands literally. The first time always takes a lot longer and is way harder than if a professional did it. The next time is easier and over time you develop "I can take care of mentality" or at least look at a job and say "yeah...there is a reason I'm going to pay a professional to take care of this :)"
