RE: The Person-Oriented Paradigm: Developing a Helping Relationship

Compassion is an important aspect of helping or counseling. To be an effective counselor, one must possess this trait. I agree with Wayne Mack when he said that compassion is not just an emotion; it is, in fact, a matter of choice. Personally, there are times when I am on the verge of lacking compassion, and it is my choice whether I will still show or express it. Even though it is hard, by God’s grace I am able to do so. I also realize that in this way, I see my limitations and my need for Jesus. Times like this becomes an avenue and opportunity to experience Christlikeness.

As I said in the class, it is like love. Love, primarily, is not confined to feeling or emotion but is a matter of the will and commitment. The same thing with compassion.
