What if the second situation was mostly because of the financial benefits they were getting? Probably if you had withdrawn those benefits silently instead of confronting them, silence being the best answer would have still worked out in that situation.

I think it would put me in more difficult situation. They had the courage to react in that way when they were getting money. Without money, it could be worse.
