My Naija people,International Women’s Day(IWD) in Nigeria dey tilt more performative than real revolution right now. Every March we see the red dresses, the trending hashtags, the corporate selfies with #BreakTheBias banners, and big men dropping speeches like confetti. But the same streets still full of domestic violence wey no dey end, girls still dey drop out because of early marriage or "no money for school fees,” and some offices where women dey do the heavy lifting but the top seats still get “men only” vibe. It’s like we celebrate the idea of progress but we no dey do the real, painful work to fix the root cause. E sweet for eye and ear, but e no touch ground.
But make I no lie finish the day still dey drop small seeds wey dey grow for some corners.I recall how the noise around IWD push many Naija sisters to start bold conversations inside their churches, markets, and WhatsApp groups.Talk wey turn into local support networks for widows and survivors wey no dey wait for government. I remember stories of young women who heard one of those panel discussions, picked up courage, and went back to school or started small businesses their communities never thought possible.Even some husbands wey used to laugh at “women rights” now dey pause small-small because their daughters dey ask questions at home.
No be massive change yet, but e dey create that slow shift in how we value our women, not as decoration, but as the real engine wey dey move Naija forward.
So yes, too much performance dey there, but the awareness e dey spark no be joke. The real question for us now,na how we go turn the noise into everyday action? Na that one go separate celebration from true liberation.Wetin you think?
