I always try to see if I can take the car for a day or two. If you ask on a Friday or Saturday the often tell you to bring back Monday. Most places here do that.

Wow! Nobody does that here! It's much easier to "test" the car when you have a day or two to try it... ;) Here, most of the time, they do allow you to take the car to (your) mechanic, but that's also usually with them going with you...
