It was that bad.
The chiefs became prominent, rich and famous by selling their own kindred.
The worst was that the primitive kings never considered the consequences. It felt so bad reading about those evil days.

Greed has always been inherent in humans. And when greed and power are found in the same place, problems will abound. Just like today where the 1% steal what's meant for the others without fear, same as then when those stupid kings sold their kindred for wealth.
