I'll confess I have not put much effort into Conquest Mode, but that is because I simply can't figure it out.

You're absolutely right, the conquest mode isn't easy to understand because there are so many golems and so many different abilities. Perhaps it would have been better to start with just a few golems, and I also agree that an in-game tutorial explaining the game mode would have been useful.
