From the Directory to Hive: A Short History of Rare Pepe

Before "NFT" was a household word, there were Rare Pepes.

2016 — The Rare Pepe Directory

In 2016, a group of meme artists began issuing Pepe trading cards as tokens on Counterparty, a protocol built on top of Bitcoin. Submissions were reviewed by a committee for rarity and quality, then catalogued in the Rare Pepe Directory. Across ~36 series and roughly 1,700+ cards, Rare Pepe became the first serious experiment in curated, provably-scarce digital art. On Bitcoin. In 2016.

PEPECASH — the currency of the meme

The Directory even had its own money: PEPECASH, the Counterparty token used to buy, sell, and submit Rare Pepes. Rare Pepes, quite literally, needed cash — and that cash was PEPECASH.

The legendary sales

  • Homer Pepe, a one-of-a-kind card, sold for 350 ETH at the Rare Digital Art Festival in January 2018.
  • PEPENOPOULOS, a card honoring Andreas Antonopoulos, later stunned collectors at auction.

Reclaiming the frog

Rare Pepe also became part of saving Pepe — reclaiming a beloved character for art and community, in the spirit its creator intended.

Onto Hive

Today that legacy continues in new homes — including Emblem Vault, which wraps original Counterparty Rare Pepes so they can travel to Ethereum, and here on Hive, where tokens like $RPEPE carry the scarcity-first, community-first spirit forward. 🐸

History rhymes. Feels good, man.
