Not so, it is currently 13 weeks.
if I remember correctly, the original Steem period for powering down was six months. The reasoning was to have only those with diamond commitment to actually have control over monetary policy. Then it was reduced to three months to let those with wooden hands in. Then it was reduced to thirteen weeks. Now people want to reduce it even further. The Terra/Luna network has argued for longer powerdown times for those who vote on monetary policy better than @dan ever could.
2 years initially.

Well 13 weeks is rougly 3 months, so I think you are confused, I have been around since 2016 and I think you are right it was 6 months back then, but I am not sure if I remember correctly.
I can tell you that I almost only use LasseCash and we have 26 weeks (roughly 6 months powerdown) to incentivize longterm mentality.
I sold most of my Hive, only left some Hive Power to have enough for RC for posting and stuff, but where its happening for me is LasseCash, I dont care if they change the powerdown time of Hive, because those whales never rewarded me for good content for 6 years and they dont understand anarcho capitalism and flat earth, so they are not worth my time.
