If you've ever tried to reprogram your mind with affirmations while you sleep, then you know there are (at least) two versions of you.
Something strange happened the other night. I put on my AirPods, let the frequencies play, and drifted off. The first time I tried this, I had an instant lucid dream. The moment I became aware inside the dream, I noticed something odd—I couldn’t hear the AirPods anymore!
At first, I brushed it off. But then things got weirder. Every time I woke up during the night, the sound from the AirPods was delayed—just for a split second. It was like my ears had to “catch up” to the fact that I was awake. The moment I opened my eyes, poof—the sound would fade back in, as if someone flipped a switch in the Matrix.
I thought about it for a while. Maybe it’s because light travels faster than sound. But the effect felt surreal, like my consciousness was rebooting in stages.
And then the real question hit me: If I was asleep and the music was playing into my ears, but I couldn’t hear it… then who is listening?
The other me. The subconscious. An island unto itself.
