Doxxing or OSINT? Before going to the story, let's explore the meaning of Doxxing and OSINT first.

The term “doxxing” comes from online hacker disputes in the 1990s, when “dropping docs” referred to revealing a rival’s identity. Since then, the tactic has evolved from the term “docs” to the more familiar “dox.”
Doxxing as an isolated act isn't directly illegal, especially when the disclosed information is from the public domain and has been acquired through lawful means. However, the legal perspective can shift based on regional laws: in some places, doxxing might be illegal if it leads to harassment or threats.

Open source intelligence (OSINT) is the collection and analysis of data gathered from open sources (covert sources and publicly available information; PAI) to produce actionable intelligence.

There's a drama that's hyped in my community. It's about a girl who's still in Junior High School but has already done a serious thing: Using another person's data to rent a costume. To make it simple, I will use "JuniorX" as the nickname of the stealer, "VictimX" as the nickname of the girl whose photo was stolen, "VictimY" as the nickname of the girl whose Identification card was stolen, and "RentX" as the nickname of the costume renter.

Long story short, it starts when JuniorX rents a costume with an alternative account and damages it when she tries to send it back to RentX. With a lack of JuniorX's proof of the unboxing video (not full) and RentX boxing video, RentX was already pissed off because JuniorX doesn't even want to acknowledge her fault. JuniorX even challenged RentX to post this problem publicly. RentX gives the guarantee money back and posts it as a blacklist to another renter. VictimY commented on the post that it's her ID and it's already verified as VictimY's ID. Someone is telling RentX about VictimX and it's already verified as VictimX's photo. As a result, JuniorX edited VictimX's photo with VictimY's Identification card and made it look similar enough as a guarantee.

After some data collection from many accessible sources, JuniorX's real identity has been found. RentX asked her directly to clarify the stolen photo publicly and JuniorX needed to say that she wouldn't do that again (No police needed) but JuniorX refused it. Then, comes one more person let's call him "LoverX" because he's JuniorX's boyfriend. LoverX counters RentX with an edited chat between RentX and JuniorX that shows JuniorX wants to pay the damaged fee. RentX saved it before LoverX deleted it 😂. She doesn't want the drama spread out with her real face or ID blacklisted on everyone. No apology video uploaded by JuniorX until now. The last word is she will buy the costume herself next time.

Bad behavior, Identity theft, and manipulated media (photo and video). It makes people who know this drama angry with her. It's what makes them try to get information based on her social account. Be sure to no more victims, JuniorX's real name, age, city, mother name, father name, and high school name are announced publicly by someone who got all the information.

Is it Doxxing or OSINT? Legal or not? Some people are still wondering about that.

Facts about all of the information:

1. All data already shared publicly from the JuniorX main account and her family.
2. The purpose is to make people aware of not doing any "rent" transactions from her again.

Fun Fact: JuniorX posted that she wants to take legal action against someone who leaked the information and the accusations. No legal action taken until now.

Sad fact: From the real story spread mouth to mouth, her social account is flooded by cyberbullying that commented her as a criminal which is illegal.

Based on the purpose and the source, I think it's OSINT and legal. However, from a different point of view, OSINT also can become Doxxing and lead to illegal activity when Cyberbullying happens. That's why some websites say that doxxing is a dark side of OSINT.

What to learn?

• Never put too much information on social media.
• Always responsible for everything.
• Sometimes being neutral is the best. Watch the drama and have fun.
• It's better to use what is yours.
