Downvotes are necessary on Hive for a number of reasons, but when getting downvoted personally without knowing why, it can feel pretty bad - even if they are tiny downvotes. Often though, it isn't about being kind or unkind. Try not to take them too personally though! What you will find is that the really "personal" ones will be the biggest ones. I think the biggest I have received in value (not that it took this value from my post as the post was worth like $5) was a $300+ DV :D
Yeah agree with you - that downvotes are necessary. As Hive users increase over time, I do hope that these mechanisms can be improved so that we try to improve on the accuracy of penalising more of the bad users and less of the good users (unintentionally).
Yeah I have received some bigger downvotes in rare instances, but they were generally for posts that have higher post rewards (>$30) so I can still accept the rationale given the one off nature of such occurrences.
