RE: I AM A WITNESS!! 🐝My Hive Witness Node Journey🍯

Congrats on your new Hive witness journey.

this runs on 3.5" spinning disks

It's bold, but viable. The problem is that it takes ages when you have to do a replay. But after that, it works.

HHD: 28 TB in various RAID configurations (60 TB of actual Hard Drives in total)

With that amount of available storage, it would be fun to try to spin up an API node since the main obstacle is often disk space. I'd be curious to see how this performs based on memory and cache allocation. That's where it might get stuck. Also, be prepared for several weeks of replay! 😅

So because of that I went with Hive 1.27.10. Was this a mistake?

No, we have several (top) witnesses, including me, running that version. You can check it here.

Most of the guides I have seen are geared around 1.27.8 and honestly I should have gone with that version # because I think I wouldn't have run into as many problems if I had.

I'm not sure. Depending on your Ubuntu version, it could have been even worse.

Looking forward to your contribution to the community.

PS2: Thank you for the mention and kind words.
PS3: Arc(h)ange(ls) are asexuals. That being said, I use to appear as a man when going public 😇

Arcange... not going to lie. Seeing what people like you and acidyo (to just name a few) do here on HIVE is what drove me to try to participate as much as I can. And figured a Witness Node was my first real building block into the deep deep rabbit hole of HIVE :)

I literally have your site https://hive.arcange.eu/schedule up on 1 of my windows 24/7 just to see what the most recent block is and track witnesses. So thanks for making it!!

Spinning Disks = replay time, yeah it sucks a LOT. Which is why I need to stop messing around with my NUC and just get it up already. although I am having regrets only getting a 1 TB SSD for it as the block_log being ~500GB and then all the 'part' files basically being another 500GB is rough lol

API Node = never thought about that but willingly to give it a go down the road. I still have about 30 open 3.5 disk slots in my NAS so I can always scale up my space :)

That made me chuckle a little outload! thank you for that :) I am always so bad with assuming sexes of people I never met and only know online.
