This looks like one of the Bollywood movies I have watched, your reason is valid... If your honesty will get you killed, it is better not to say or do anything.. that way you can still protect yourself, you didn't lie, you just choose not to do anything...

Hmm. Such a scene is common in Bollywood movies, but when it happens in real live it's pathetic. Life is more important for me and I would choose to be corrupted rather than dying in such a corrupt system.
