For everyone wondering: The Magi chain has currently some issues with Hive API Nodes. That will get solved very soon :) Until then the okinoko.io is not working unfortunately.
Related to the last part of your post:
Great idea with the "buying for someone else" - I will write "gifting tickets" on my todo list for an update of the contract :) If that is enabled such a beneficiary service could be possible.
