UNSCHOOLING EDUCATION: WEIGHT AND SCALES

avatar

Weight is one of essential life concepts, and my son met it directly some days ago in our course of Maths for the 1st grade kids.

There we faced many tasks with concept of weight that propose kids to count kiloes and make addition and subtraction with them.

The best way to understand weight is....to use scales of course! and just see this very weight by our own eyes.

So we combined Maths time with this funny scales game.

Oh, it was just fine!
We weighed evething we saw!

We started with veggies and fruits we have, but it was so ordinary and boring, and we changed our objects:)

My son weighed all his favourite toys, compared who weighed more and less, made Maths actions analyzing how much they would wiegh together, or how much was one heavier than the other...

He was so excited making such simple but not usual actions for him.

Then we played Shop game, where he was a seller with scales, and I was a customer.
Scales, weight + money actions = super Maths lesson!

Actually, when I was a kid, I adored playing this game! I didn't have scales then, and I made a handmade scales using just a ...hanger;)) it's hard to imagine it, but somehow they worked fine for my game;)

And of course, we weighed him and me - 19 and 45 kg are good results for both of us😄

I have a weight so equal to that you have. So I will begin to put into practice your teaching-learning strategy in my home.

Greetings and blessings
