Definition Of Success

Success means different things to different people. To some people, success means achieving a goal, and to others, success means having money in excess. If I am told to define success in my own terms, I would say that success means reaching a stage where a person feels fulfilled, and it could be anything at all.

Take, for example, John, an SS3 student who has been struggling to gain admission into the university, but all his efforts have been in vain. He has written several exams and even paid money to secure admission into the university, but there was nothing to show for it. He even skipped an examination year because he felt frustrated, as though the university did not want to admit him to further his education. He became really depressed, but later, he was encouraged to enroll for the entrance exam the following year. This time, he got admitted, and at that moment, he felt successful, he felt fulfilled. At that moment, we can say he achieved success. He became successful even though his academic journey had just begun and he was yet to know how well he would fare in that journey.

The little story illustration above is a simple way I use to define success. Anyone can be successful, and it is not meant only for adults or family people, because success exists at different levels and in different stages. What success means to the richest man on earth right now could simply be joy and peace of mind, while to the poorest man on earth, being successful could mean just having enough money to feed daily without any struggles.

There was also a time, a period I cannot forget in a hurry, when I needed to hit a particular score in my exams. I needed that score to graduate with a good overall grade in my school. I had been getting low scores, but that semester, I just needed to hit the target. That became a huge concern and a major priority for me. Fortunately, I scored above the target that semester, and I felt fulfilled. I smashed the goal in grand style, and that is what being successful means to me.
