How excited those days where as the Indiaunited prompt for this week took me back to those memories of my first personal earning. There is nothing like the fruit of your own labor. I meant how good it feels when not just expecting from your parents or senior siblings.

The first personal earning was when I finished my high school. Although I was eager to gain admission but you know how these things works. Its either waiting for JAMB, need to re-seat one or two papers or Center was canceled. So these things has never been easy from on set.

I told my parents that I don’t want to seat at home while waiting. That I needed to go look for a job to keep myself busy. So immediately they permitted, I went out every morning of the week, going through the commercial areas of the city 🌆 in search of any job that I can fit into . And basically, I was paying attention to the areas that will be closer to where I live with my parents to avoid paying transportation fees as this will enable me not collect money from my parents

And truly God was by my side because after the first two weeks of going out every other two days, I came across this furniture 🪑 outlet with display of chairs of all kinds, designed we finished beds and other cabinets in their show-room. And not that I saw any advertisement on job, but I just walked into the outlet. Luckily I met a young girl almost my age whom I waked up to. The first thing I asked her after we greeted was “Do you people need a Receptionist? She waited awhile and asked me to seat down.

I was already so excited 😆 as she walked into an office that looks like her bosses office. And after a while she opened the door of the office and waved me to come into the office. There and then I met her boss who started asking me some questions like my name, where I live, why was I looking for a job. And I answered the questions with confidence and without wasting time because I needed that job.

And truly, I got the job because the furniture outlet needed someone who will be recording all the new purchased materials that the boys who works at the workshop area uses. So the boss asked me to resume work by next coming Monday since it was already Thursday of the week. We negotiated on the salary and concluded on the amount of =N= 10,000.00 monthly salary. Oh my God I can not tell you how happy I was to be earning =N= 10, 000.00 This is over 20 years ago now and that was when the Nigeria 🇳🇬 currency had so much value

I went home so excited and waited to tell my parents once they got back . My mother was happy for me. And I resumed work at the workshop the started Monday, went through some guide on how to record materials that are purchased, used, and remaining in a Ledger 📒 every day. In fact, this my first job in a furniture workshop gave me some insight on how to do some DIY interiors and furniture making. And gradually the days went by, followed by the weeks and I could not contend the joy when I was paid my first personal earned salary at the end of that month. I felt so happy that I bought some fruits from the money to give to my parents. Then asked my mother to help me save the remaining. And which at the end of every month I will save money with her as the job lasted a while before University admission.

It was truly an experience I enjoyed due to how I learned many things during this work opportunity and on how I was able to save money that helped me to purchase many items immediately I got my university admission. Things were really in order during those days than now. Right now its very hard for teenagers to secure work due to how hard the economy has become.
