Let's all admit the truth, staying focused these days is not easy at all because one minute you are working, the next minute, you have somehow watched 12 reels, and ended up on a football video when you don’t even like football.(Story of my life)😅 Distractions are everywhere, and sometimes the worst is that it's always closer to you, in your mind, space, yunno, something to stop you from getting the work done. But over time, I have found a few practical ways to deal with it. For me, the three biggest areas I constantly have to manage are my phone, my friends, and my to-do list.
In the phone aspect, omo! I think phones should have a warning label: “Danger-may swallow hours of your life without you realizing it.” (Shey, you grab?😅) I don't understand how I will pick up my phone just to check the time, and then, I’m watching videos of people cooking food I’ll never try or reading random facts about things that won't add value to my life. Social media/ Internet is designed to pull you in, and if you are not careful, you blink and half your day is gone. So what do I do? I distance myself from my phone when I need to focus. Sometimes I put it in another room, sometimes I turn off notifications (put it in Do Not Disturb Mode), and other times I just switch it off. It sounds extreme right? But trust me, the less I see it, the better I can concentrate. Out of sight, out of mind, they say.
Then there are my friends. Don’t get me wrong there, I love my few friends so much. They are fun, supportive, and always ready to gist. But that’s also the problem. “Let’s just talk for five minutes” almost always turns into two hours of laughter, stories, and random debates about nothing important. (I even have to write this down because one is coming to see me today and believe me, she has loads of gists to overload😅) So tell me how you would want me to be writing and listening to her, it's not possible right? But I have learned to set small boundaries. If I’m working, I let them know “Give me one hour, then I’ll be free.” That way, I don’t feel guilty for ignoring them, and I also don’t lose my entire day to gist. Sometimes I even put my phone on silent so I don’t get tempted to reply immediately. Friends are important, but so is protecting my time.
The third struggle for me is my to-do list. Now, I know some people hear “to-do list” and roll their eyes because they have written lists that never got done. I used to do that too, I mean long lists of ten or fifteen tasks a day that only stressed me out, and you know what? I don't even get to finish like 5 of them. But then I realized the secret: keep it short and simple. I write down just three main things I need to do each day (I wrote down 6 for today and I've gotten two ticked, right on the third currently) Once I finish them, I already feel accomplished, and if I have energy left, I can add more. This makes the workload less intimidating and helps me stay on track. It also gives me a sense of progress, which is so motivating for me.
So when you put it all together, my focus formula looks like this: Silence the phone, set boundaries with friends, and keep the to-do list realistic. It’s not even perfect, sometimes I still fall into the trap of distractions but these habits keep me grounded. At the end of the day, my focus is on making small, intentional choices over and over again.
And the good news? The internet, the gist, and the memes will always be there when I’m done. But the satisfaction of completing what I set out to do? That’s worth fighting for and I so love it.🤭
Over to you, how do you stay focused in a distracted world? I would love to read from you in the comment section or your blog link. 🙂
