What I Would Advise My Past Self

This week's contest from the #indiaunited community, which you can join by following the rules in this post, presents a very interesting prompt:

What advice would you give to someone who just finished high school?

As I mentioned in my title, if my present self could give advice to my past self, I would recommend that after finishing high school, they dedicate a year to working in the field of the profession they intend to study at university—before enrolling—to see the reality of the career, and whether it matches their expectations, and whether it’s something they could do for the rest of their life.

Although work shouldn’t be the most important thing in a person’s life, it is vitally important, as it will be the source of income and will finance the rest of the activities a person engages in.

Therefore, the career or profession a person chooses should be one in which they can feel fulfilled and happy. It’s no coincidence that one of the most commonly used phrases by mentors is:

Choose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.

This makes a lot of sense, since work occupies a third of our day and nearly half of our lives in most cases. So it would be a shame to spend that time doing something we don’t enjoy.

If I had worked as an assistant in an accounting firm, I would have seen the reality of the profession in my country, and I would never have chosen to study it at university.

I believe this would have been the best advice I could have received when I was in high school, and it might have positively changed the course of my life.

That’s why, if someone asked me for advice at this stage of their life, I would offer this:

Dedicate a year to verifying through work whether the career you plan to pursue at university is one you can see yourself doing for the rest of your life, and one that will bring you fulfillment and satisfaction.

Lo que aconsejaría a mi yo del pasado

El concurso de esta semana de la comunidad #indiaunited al cual pueden unirse siguiendo las reglas contenidas en esta publicación plantea una propuesta muy interesante, que es la siguiente:

¿Qué consejo darías a alguien que terminó la escuela secundaria?

Como decía en mi título, si mi yo del presente pudiera darle un consejo a mi yo del pasado, le recomendaría que luego de terminar la escuela secundaria dedicara un año a trabajar en el área de la profesión que pretendiera estudiar en la universidad antes de matricularse, para ver la realidad de la carrera, y si es tal cual se lo imagina, y si es algo que podría hacer por el resto de su vida.

Aunque el trabajo no debería ser lo más importante en la vida de una persona, es una parte de vital importancia, ya que será la fuente de sustento y financiará el resto de actividades que una persona realiza.

Por lo tanto, la carrera o profesión que una persona elija, debe ser una en la que pueda sentirse plena y feliz, no en vano una de las frases mas utilizadas por los mentores es esta:

Elige un trabajo que ames, y no trabajarás un solo día.

Esto tiene mucha lógica, ya que el trabajo es algo que ocupa un tercio de nuestro día, y casi la mitad de nuestras vidas, en la mayoría de los casos, por lo que sería una pena estar haciendo algo que no nos gusta.

Si yo hubiera trabajado como asistente en una consultora de contabilidad, hubiera conocido la realidad de la profesión en mi país, y no la hubiera elegido jamás para estudiarla en la Universidad.

Creo que este hubiera sido el mejor consejo que me hubiera gustado que alguien me diera cuando estaba estudiando la escuela secundaria, y que tal vez habría cambiado para bien el curso de mi vida.

Por eso, si alguien me pidiera un consejo en esta etapa de su vida, le daría este:

Dedicate un año a comprobar mediante el trabajo si la carrera que piensas elegir en la Universidad es una que podrás realizar el resto de tu vida, y que te brindará plenitud y satisfacción.
