The Software That Quietly Built Me

Recently, I have been seeing a lot of people learning different types of skills, from hand skills to digital skills, because going to school and having a certificate does not really work anymore. Now it takes the skills that you know to put food on the table, which made me wonder if anyone has ever struggled to learn a skill but they later became good at it... Yeah, that was me back then in school when I started learning some of the architectural software because I needed it for my field and even to pass my exams, and I will not lie, when I began to learn this, it wasn't something very easy because I was new to it and I felt lost. You know we have different brains at which we grab something, and while some seem to understand it easily, I was busy spending my night on YouTube, and thank God for some of my friends that put me through because I know I really messed up some quick approach classwork back then.

Before going fully in and getting determined to learn it, I thought architecture was all about the pencil and paper drawing, which I was very much comfortable with, but I never knew that there is a new upgrade and that our world has moved beyond drawing on the table. There were times I almost gave up because I knew I was not really getting AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, and the rest of the 3D software. But when we began doing assignments, classwork, tests, and exams that required all these software programs, I had no other choice than to stay glued to my screen.

I asked a series of questions of my seniors, and I did a lot of overnight watching YouTube, staying with friends, and doing trial and error. Even with the frustration from NEPA and the internet connection, I stayed focused because I knew what I was into.

As time went on, I began to make some significant improvements. I started putting some people through by assisting them. I began collecting some design works from my friends, juniors, and even seniors who are busy because they have other projects they are working on, and this boosted my morale. Because back then and right now, I have seen a lot of big changes.

Even though designing using architectural software requires a lot of skills, mindset, determination, improvement, and time, I still keep learning because things keep changing and new improvements keep coming out. But at the moment, when I am faced with some challenges, I usually look back and tell myself that since I was able and patient enough to overcome the stress of running up and down to learn the software skills, I will definitely get past this too.

Staying connected with people who knows better than we do and having an unquenchable decision to change and to improve our lives, helps a lot. Good one!.
