Everyone Is Fighting a Battle You Cannot See From the Outside

I used to judge people fast. The coworker who seemed cold and distant. The driver who cut me off without signalling. The friend who cancelled plans again for what looked like no real reason. I built quiet little stories about all of them in my head, usually unflattering, usually built around the idea that they were just careless or rude.

Then life slowed down enough one year to show me what was actually happening behind a few of those moments. The coworker was watching a parent slowly die. The friend cancelling plans was barely holding herself together through something she had not told anyone yet. People i had quietly judged were carrying weight i had no idea existed, weight that would have completely changed how i saw their behaviour if i had known.
It humbled me in a way i still think about.

We walk around making snap judgements based on a few seconds of someone's behaviour, completely blind to what they are actually carrying. The short reply. The cancelled plan. The distracted conversation. We build entire narratives from fragments and rarely stop to consider the fragment is not the whole picture.

This does not mean every bad behaviour gets a free pass, or that boundaries should disappear just because someone might be struggling. People are still responsible for how they treat others, regardless of what is happening privately. But there is a real difference between holding someone accountable and assuming the absolute worst about their character based on one moment witnessed out of context.

I try now to leave a little more room before deciding what someone's behaviour means. Not because everyone deserves unlimited grace no matter what, but because i have been wrong too many times about what was actually happening beneath the surface to trust my first read completely.

Everyone you meet today is carrying something you cannot see. That does not excuse everything. But it is worth remembering before deciding you have someone fully figured out.
