Recently the way people dress has become a bone of contention. Some people have this mindset that certain clothes are capable of attracting unwanted attention, while others disagree, stating that clothing doesn’t create bad intentions; rather, harmful behaviors come from the mindset and choices of the people.

For me, who sees clothing as something that attracts unwanted attention, my own ideology is simple: clothing is a means by which we express ourselves; it can be culture, personality, fashion, or someone’s mood. I don’t really think that what a person wears should be used as an excuse for someone's harmful actions or thoughts. If truly cloth were the cause of these bad intentions or bad actions, I'd keep asking myself why our young boys and girls are victims of violence and abuse. We all know that kids are not the ones buying clothes for themselves, but still, these kids are abused, so I have come to the conclusion that clothing is not the problem but our mindset.
If we keep blaming clothes, that means we are trying to shift responsibility away from the cause; if someone abuses another, the responsibility should lie on the person who made the decision. I keep telling people as far as you are an adult, you are responsible for controlling your thoughts and actions.
We are living in a world that has different cultures; we should always have this in our minds: people's modes of dressing depend on their culture, environment, and personal preferences. A cloth that you see as inappropriate can be normal cloth for another. For me judging someone’s character or blaming them for another person’s behavior based on appearance is unfair.

The debate is weaker when you bring up the male victims. Boys and men do experience abuse and harassment, not minding what they put on. Recently, I get to understand that this goes far beyond fashion choices and women’s clothing. This mindset does not come from trousers, fabrics, skirts, etc.; rather, it comes from a lack of respect for other people’s boundaries and beliefs.
Cloth also has a social meaning; the way we dress tells people who we are and is also capable of influencing how people perceive us. We need to focus more on teaching self-control. For me, clothing doesn’t create bad intentions, nor does people’s mindset. I understand many times what someone chooses to wear can catch someone's attention, but I believe such attention does not justify harmful actions.
This is my entry on the weekly prompt, #indiaunited. Topic: Does clothing cause bad intentions, or is it a reflection of one's mindset? If clothing is the reason, why are children—both girls and boys—also victims?"
