Distractions are many, but your dream is only one

Life has never been easy for me. Sometimes when people see me smiling, they don’t know the kind of battles I fight inside. The world is full of distractions, full of pain, full of noise, and it is not easy to stay focused when everything around you is breaking.

I grew up in a family that struggled. Many nights we went to bed hungry. There were times when there was no money for school fees, no light, no food, sometimes no shelter. I remember one season of rain when the roof of our house was leaking badly, and we had to put bowls and buckets everywhere to catch the water. How do you focus on homework when you are trying not to sleep in water? But in that darkness, I still held my books close, because I told myself, if I lose focus, then I lose everything.

The streets were also another challenge. Sometimes I had to walk long distances to school because there was no money for transport. I saw friends get lost to crime, drugs, and gangs. Some of them laughed at me when I carried my books, saying life is about fast money. I almost joined them once, but something in me whispered, stay strong, your tomorrow can be different. That voice became my focus.

There was also a day I will never forget. I was involved in a small accident while running an errand. I fell, injured my leg, and could not walk well for weeks. In that time, I felt useless, I felt life was unfair. But even in pain, I held on to the belief that this was not the end. I forced myself to keep reading, keep learning, because I knew the world will not wait for me.

Politics and environment also made things worse. In my area, during election times, people fought on the streets. One day I came back from school and met people throwing stones, shouting, threatening each other. I had to hide until it was safe. At that moment, I asked myself, how can a child like me focus in this kind of world? But I realized focus is not about the world being quiet, it is about me finding peace inside myself.

Even family was not always easy. Sometimes I had to take care of my younger ones, sometimes I was sent out to hustle on the street just to get something small for the house. At times, I felt like giving up. But giving up was a luxury I could not afford.

Today, when I look back, I see that the world will always have distractions, poverty, noise, friends, politics, even your own pain. But focus is like a small light in your heart. Even if the whole world is dark, if you protect that light, it will guide you.

My life has taught me one thing: focus is not when everything is easy, focus is when everything is against you, yet you still choose to fight for your dream.

5 Ways to Stay Focused in a World Full of Distractions

Remember your “why”: When you feel like giving up, remind yourself why you started in the first place. Your dream is the fuel that keeps you moving.

Create your own quiet space: Even if the world is noisy, find a corner where you can think, pray, or read. Sometimes peace is not outside but inside you.

Choose your friends wisely: Friends can either build you or destroy you. Stay close to those who inspire you, not those who pull you down.

Turn pain into power: Use your struggles as motivation. Let poverty, hunger, or hardship push you to fight harder, not to give up.

Be disciplined daily: Focus is not one big action, it is small daily steps. Wake up, do your tasks, and push forward, even when you don’t feel like it.
