Something different at work

I won't say I've been badgering but I e frequently been in my manager's ears about my job. I'm satisfied with where I am right now but I told him that I'm hungry for more exposure and responsibility.

I intend to do training and upskill to get better roles but that doesn't mean I shouldn't maximize the opportunities at my current role. This is why I've been regularly asking for avenues to climb up the ladder and make my mark in the company.

Whether it's videogames or work, I'm the type of person that strives for recognition. I simply don't want to exist as a number squabbling at the bottom. At the end of the day, we're all just numbers but I want to be a big number, you know?

Anyway, in recent times I've been getting a lot of praise from management about my input at work and this has gotten me some positive reviews. Customers have given glowing reviews about how I've treated them as well.

So, while hitting institutional targets, I've managed to find a healthy balance in my approach that's made customers feel happy to renew with us. All of this has worked in my favour and today, I'll be trying my hands at a different role.

A few weeks ago I was somewhat gutted that I didn't cut it for a management position because it came too soon. Management indicated that I'm mentally capable of the role but it came too soon for me, so it'll be "setting me up to fail". I respected the decision and just doubled down on my duties.

My manager then explained to me that I'll instead be weaned into the responsibilities of a management position and that brings us to today. Today, I take my first step towards management by being responsible for a team while the leader is absent.

So, just for today, I'll be off phone calls and instead be giving guidance and assistance to any team without a leader. This is basically my audition for management positions and I have to tap into every mental resource at my disposal to maximize this opportunity.

I'll be interacting with a new group of people, aiding them and sharing my experience that could help them reach their goals. I'm both excited and nervous but I know my capacity and believe I'll make a good impression.

That’s exciting congrats man! Don’t rush too fast into management though. You need to make sure you have enough exposure at the base layers and the different areas around you. It will make you a more effective manager when you are well rounded. You can go too high too quickly and that’s not a good situation to be in either. Fake it till you make it only gets you so far with these things.

Hopefully things aren’t too hectic with the management responsibilities today.

Oh absolutely. I know that I still have plenty to learn before getting into management, so I'm not rushing it. Yesterday, I simply got my first taste of it to prepare my mind for what is to come. I'll be drip fed into it and also do courses as well.
