Jahmal

This is the story of Jahmal.

In the small streets of Kingston, Jamaica, where there is a scorching sun, Jahmal Thompson was born. From a young age, his life was marked by the African rhythm of the area. His father was an ordinary fisherman, and with what Jahmal helped him day by day, he was able to buy an old guitar when he turned ten. Jahmal spent hours playing under a mango tree.

The young man grew up listening to reggae greats like Bob Marley or Jimmy Cliff. But he had a unique kind of style, a mix of reggae and blues. By the age of twenty, he was already known in the small markets and on the beaches of Jamaica, where people stopped to listen to his songs.

When the COVID19 pandemic hit Jamaica in 2020, the world stopped. Tourists disappeared, bars closed and the streets emptied. Jahmal was out of work and had no way to share his music but found an opportunity through social media.

To his pleasant surprise, the young man's video went viral, so Jahmal began to publish videos frequently: reggae covers, his own songs and even improvisations with his younger brother, who played drums with pots and cans. His followers grew very quickly and he soon received support from people from different countries such as Brazil, Peru or even Spain.

A production company offered him to record a completely virtual album since it was not known how long the quarantine would continue and Jahmal was very excited, he dreamed of traveling once the pandemic was over and taking his music to the whole world.

In mid-2021, just when his career was beginning to take off, Jahmal contracted COVID. At first everything was normal, just another cold but as the days went by his condition worsened. In a hospital crowded with people, including doctors, nurses and patients, little was done for the people other than having a thread of hope.

The young man's body could not hold out when Covid took over his lungs and he had to be intubated. He died a week after being admitted to the intensive care unit. His brother and his family let their followers know on social media what happened, getting many people around the world to join in by sharing his songs.

To this day, the melody of his guitar can still be heard on the streets of Kingston. Children repeat his songs, and street vendors sell t-shirts with his smiling face.

Jahmal

Esta es la historia de Jahmal.

En las pequeñas calles de Kingston, Jamaica, donde hay un sol abrasador nacio Jahmal Thompson. Desde pequeño, su vida estuvo marcada por el ritmo africano de la zona, su padre era un pescador comun y corriente,y con lo que jahmal le ayudaba dia a dia pudo comprarse una guitarra vieja cuando cumplio diez años. Jahmal pasaba horas tocando bajo un arbol de mango.

El joven crecio escuchando a los grandes del reggae como Bob Marley o Jimmy Cliff. Pero el tenia un tipo de estilo unico, una mezcla de de reggae y blues. A los veinte años, ya era conocido en los pequeños mercados y en las playas de Jamaica, donde la gente se detenia a escuchar sus canciones.

Cuando la pandemia de COVID19 llegó a Jamaica en 2020, el mundo se detuvo. Los turistas desaparecieron, los bares cerraron y las calles se vaciaron. Jahmal estaba sin trabajo y sin manera de compartir su musica pero encontro una oportunidad a traves de las redes sociales.

Para su grata sorpresa, el mismo video del joven se volvio viral por lo que Jahmal comenzo a publicar videos frecuentemente: covers de reggae, canciones propias y hasta improvisaciones con su hermano menor, que tocaba la bateria con ollas y latas. Su seguidores crecieron muy rapido y pronto recibio apoyo de gente de diferentes paises como Brasil, Peru o hasta España.

Una productora le ofrecio grabar un album completamente virtual ya que no se sabia hasta cuando iba a seguir la cuarentena y Jahmal estaba muy emocionado, soñaba con viajar una vez acabe la pandemia y llevar su musica a todo el mundo.

A mediados de 2021, justo cuando su carrera comenzaba a despegar, Jahmal contrajo COVID. Al principio era todo normal, un resfrio mas pero con el pasar de los dias su condicion empeoro. En un hospital abarrotado de gente, entre ellos medicos, enfermeros y pacientes, poco se hacia por la gente mas que tener un hilo de esperanza.

El cuerpo del joven no pudo aguantar cuando el covid se apodero de sus pulmones y tuvo que ser intubado, fallecio una semana luego dfe haber ingresado a la unidad de terapia intensiva. Su hermano junto a su familia hicieron saber a sus seguidores en redes sociales lo que ocurrio logrando que muchas personas alrededor del mundo se unieran compartiendo sus canciones.

Al dia de hoy en las calles de Kingston todavia se escucha la melodia de su guitarra. Los niños repiten sus canciones, y los vendedores ambulantes venden camisetas con su rostro sonriente.

La apertura de packs de hoy estuvo normal, si bien no toco ninguna epica pero me tocaron buenas cartas raras.
