Soemone asked me what African songs sound like and I saw that as an inspiration to create this post. If you are someone who is very much familiar with music, you will get to know that every African song aims at making you shake your body unlike foreign music which may be R&B or maybe full of some slow songs with a different great vibe entirely.
This is why African songs are mostly called Afro pop because the definition of Afro pop is songs that we can dance to or shake our body to. It is never possible to listen to an Afro pop song without having to shake your body.
Here, I’m not saying the beat has to be unnecessarily fast so that you can dance. It may be a kind of slow song that you will still be able to dance to.
One thing we all should know about Afro songs is that they are mostly sung by Nigerian artistes. Afro pop is practiced in Ghana as well but right now, Nigerians have taken the lead by releasing more Afro tunes.
I’d be shating a few Afro songs so you can understand me better.
Seyi Vibes - Lagos
As I said earlier, the fact that Afro pop songs should be able to dance to does not mean that the beat must be very fast. In this song, there is the use of trumpet and drum beats which makes it an Afro pop song.
How does this sound? If you don’t believe that it is Afro, another way to realize that is by the language. The language in this song is the pidgin language which is different from the usual English we speak and that makes it an Afro pop song.
Burna Boy - Ye
If you know the father of Afro beat, you’d know Burna Boy is singing almost exactly like him. What language is in this song? Pidgin language of course. Also, you can dance to it and that is what makes it an Afro pop song.
Yemi Alade - Johhny
This song took me back to the good old days. Anyway, there are just two things you should spot so you can know that this is an Afro pop song. It’s basically the fact that it was sung with the Pidgin language.
I know you may feel the artiste is speaking English language. You may be right but this is pidgin.
Let’s be true to ourselves. Can you dance to this song or not? If yes, you have successfully recognized an Afro pop song.
Wizkid - Ojuelegba
I think this makes it clear. This is a full combination of every component of Afro music. The beat, trumpet and the Pidgin language which makes it a complete Afro pop song.
I added this to the list because it isn’t a fast song but a cool example with all the complete features of an Afro pop song.
This topic may be very wide but I’ve given you a way to recognize an Afro Pop song easily.
