The most important meal of the day (weekend)...

PXL_20241116_133047729.jpg

I got lucky this past weekend... Nope, it's not what you think. @mrsbozz took me out on a date... Nope, still not what you think! A while ago a new restaurant opened up in a town near where we live and I was lucky enough to finally get to visit it this past weekend.

It actually took them awhile to get the doors open since they were located in a building that is one of the two oldest buildings in the city. It had sat vacant for close to thirty years before the current owners bought it, and started to shore up the issues before fully renovating the space.

My wife and I would occasionally drive by when we found ourselves over in that area and look to see if the "coming soon" sign on Risers Kitchen was still up or if they were finally open.

After they did open, @mrsbozz had the chance to go there a couple of times with some of her friends. She kept telling me that we needed to go there some weekend for breakfast, but quite honestly, we just never had time. Our weekends have been so busy lately that I don't know when we would have found the time even though we wanted to.

This #weekend that finally happened.

The space is very bright with a ton of rich wood and brickwork as you can see in the photo above. They have a long bar on one side of the dining area but no stools. This area is dedicated solely to the various baked goods that they make in house and ship in for customers. It's also a well equipped coffee bar where they can fix a variety of drinks for you.

I really like the fact that they were able to keep the existing brickwork intact. It gives a very industrial feel while being warm and welcoming.

You can enter the establishment either via the front door or through the back. The front door dumps you on the main street that runs through Auburn, MI. The back door leads to a parking lot since there isn't a ton of parking up front.

On the other side of this wall is another seating space that I think they open when they are really busy, or they can also close it off for private parties it looked like. I didn't get any shots of the inside, but I think it was very similar to this side.

I was actually surprised at how much space there was on the interior of the building. It doesn't look that big from outside at all!

Higher up on the walls they have various paintings from local artists that you can purchase if you want. The vibe is definitely a bit surreal like what you can see above. I really don't know much about art, but I do know that these people seem to be very proud of their pieces. The painting that you see above had an asking price of something like $850 USD.

As you can imagine though, we didn't come for the art. Their menu is pretty small compared to a lot of breakfast places. Just one side of a 8.5" x 11" laminated piece of paper. I actually think that's kind of smart. Better to do just a few things and do them well than to try and do too many things.

There were a lot of great options to choose from on the menu. I almost went with the chicken and waffles, but I eventually settled on the western omelette.

For some reason I am always drawn to omelettes when I go out for breakfast. I think part of it has to do with the fact that I just can't make them well myself at home. They always fall apart and end up turning into "loaded" scrambled eggs. @mrsbozz says it's because we don't have the right kind of pan. She is probably right (as usual!).

I've mentioned it before, but breakfasts like this are really special for me because usually through the week I just have a bowl or cereal or some oatmeal for breakfast. It's only on the weekends that we tend to go a bit bigger and make eggs, pancakes, waffles, or french toast.

My wife got pretty much the same thing as me except she opted for just egg whites instead of full fledged eggs for her omelette. I think she also asked them to leave the sausage out of her omelette as well. She said this is what she usually gets when she comes here with her friends.

The omelette was delicious. It a ton of stuff inside of it and they did a good job of balancing the ingredients so that one didn't overwhelm the others. I have had omelettes in the past where they just put so much cheese in it that you can't taste any of the other items. That wasn't the case here. The potatoes were just average to be honest. I mean, it's not hard to mess up potatoes unless you undercook them, even burnt they aren't too horrible. These needed a little more seasoning or something. Just a little extra to make you go wow. Like maybe a herb dusting or something.

Overall, I really enjoyed our Saturday morning trip to Risers Kitchen. It was a great way to start our #weekend and since we had a lot of cleaning to do that day, it gave us the fuel we needed to power through.

That looks really good! I usually do the egg white too, not because it's really all that much healthier but I can tell myself it is... A shame the potatoes weren't great, they really are easy to make really good without much effort. You win some you lose some!

$850 for the painting? Not coming home with me at that price tag! lol

I know right! That's about how much most of them were from what I could tell. There was one that was maybe $500, but still, that is way more expensive than I would be willing to pay. Eggs are one of those things that one week they are bad for you and then the next week they change their mind again. Back and forth through the ages!

Omelette and potato is a good breakfast option. Looking at the spongy omelette, I am too craving for it....as the winter approaches sure I will get a number of them every day.

Yeah, they are definitely something to keep you warm and energized on those cold days.

Thanks! It was a really cool place. I am sure this won't be the last time we go there!

Looks like good food. $850 for a painting.... that seems a rather ambitious price. Then again, that's not an insane amount, so in a well-to-do neighborhood I could see it going for that. I've sold photo prints for more (but to corporations, not to regular joes. $300 would be my highest to a regular person).

Yeah, I was a bit shocked. I guess if they put a lot of time and effort into it .... The food was good and was enough to make me want to come back even if it isn't for the art.
