The Class of 1988

As I mentioned in my post yesterday, my wife and I had the distinct pleasure of visiting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this past weekend in Cleveland, Ohio. It was definitely a bucket list item for me and I while I am not sure I would ever visit again, I am glad we took the time to stop and look around.

Somewhere around the fourth floor (out of six) or so, there is a section of the hall of fame where they highlight different bands that have been inducted in the hall of fame. While most people tend to take a clockwise approach to this space, @mrsbozz and I being the rebels we are decided to go the opposite way. Actually, we really didn't know what this floor was all about and it was just coincidence that we went the way we did, but go ahead and think of us as cool rebels if you want.

As we were making our circuit, as the years started getting lower and lower, I kept finding myself saying "oh, that was a good year". I guess that just goes to show you how much talent there is out there.

I think it's fair to point out that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has consistently faced criticism over the years for their lack of diversity in inductees based on genre (not as crazy as it seems), gender, and race. There has also been significant concerns about the inconsistent induction criteria for band members and solo artists. Feel free to do a deep dive on Google if you want to find out more. It's a pretty deep rabbit hole.

Despite all of that, I thought it might be cool to highlight some of these induction classes as part of the #threetunetuesday initiative started by @ablaze. As the title suggests, this year we are going to be traveling back to 1988 and as you can see from the opening photo, there were quite a few amazing artists inducted that year.

I'd be a bit remiss if I didn't tackle the elephant in the room first. As much as I enjoy the Beach Boys (and @mrsbozz does not), the biggest name on the list for 1988 is definitely The Beatles. Have you ever had someone ask you what your favorite Beatles song is? That's a hard one, I know. What about your favorite Beatles album? That's kind of a loaded question as well. I usually lean towards HELP! as my favorite Beatles album, but then I start thinking about it and I remember that Revolver, Rubber Soul, and Let It Be are also quite amazing. Oh yeah, Sergeant Pepper too...

Nevermind songs like "I Will" that are tucked away on the White album and you can see why both of those questions are nearly impossible to answer.

As you can probably imagine, the hall of fame has a fairly extensive section of the exhibit area dedicated to The Beatles. I'd argue that the section for The Rolling Stones was actually bigger, but that might just be because they have been together for so much longer. If the Beatles hadn't so tragically ended, they might have an even bigger section.

Like I said, I am going to gloss over the Beach Boys because as much as they were a part of my childhood, I have a real affinity for Diana Ross and the Supremes. It's actually a bit interesting to see them included with many of the other artists in the class of 1988, but when you consider the fact that were Motown's most commercially successful act, and many see them as the most successful American female vocal group of all time.

They were so huge that he Temptations made it their goal to catch up to them in terms of fame. I really could have picked any song by them to share with you, but I decided to go with "I Hear a Symphony". It's just a really good song and I don't think anyone can deny how amazing the voice of Diana Ross is.

Finally, down just above The Supremes in the right hand corner of the opening photo, you might recognize a guy named Bob Dylan who got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
Some would argue that Dylan was one of the most influential artists in the world of rock and roll. I know he had quite an impact on The Beatles for sure.

I also remember a long time ago we bought a version of Trivial Pursuit when I was a kid that was geared towards music. It should come as no surprise that nearly 60% of the answers for any given question in that category were none other than Bob Dylan. For that reason alone, he will always be etched into my memory.

I got the chance to see Dylan once in concert, but it was during his "country" phase and he was opening for Willie Nelson at a small venue on the West side of Michigan. He didn't sing a single one of his hits in that set as he was trying to push his latest album. It was kind of a disappointment to be honest.

I spared you having to listen to that part of his journey and instead I am sharing with you "Make You Feel My Love" which is probably one of his most famously covered songs. Garth Brooks, Billy Joel, Adele, need I go on.... It's been covered so many times, but every version makes it feel like it is new again. It's just such an amazing song.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and I also hope you enjoyed meeting some of the members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 1988!

Very cool! It's interesting to see how long it took some bands to get inducted.

Indeed. Frankly it’s become a joke who’s left out. It’s a political organization. Green Day was in 7 years ago and still not Soundgarden? Who’s next Blink-182 ? I love those guys but Soundgarden is a decade overdue. Pearl Jam, Janes addiction maybe. Gary Newman should be in. Heck Foo Fighters are in it for years now. Not saying they shouldn’t be, but others should have been long ago first.

i love the Beach Boys and it was a shame hearing about the passing of Brian Wilson a couple of weeks ago or so.

Of your 3 I would rank The Supremes then Bob Dylan. Not a John Lennon fan at all. But it would have been cool seeing the Hall of Fame like you say at least once.

The whole thing of music awards is odd really as tastes vary so much and a lot of good music gets ignored. I have little idea what is in the charts now.

I've been to Beatles museums in Liverpool and Hamburg. Both are worth a trip.

Have you seen A Complete Unknown about Dylan? He doesn't come across as a nice guy, but he had a big impact on music. I've heard that you never know what you will get with his live shows and some may be bad.
