You might recall earlier this week I was talking in my post about how @mrsbozz and I went to a minor league baseball game with some of the staff at her school. If you missed it, you can check it out here. Well, as you might imagine at that ball game adult beverages were being had (of course), and at some point one of my wife's colleagues agreed that we would complete their team of six for a music trivia night that was happening later in the week.
My wife is a good hype man, she often brags about how I can name a tune in just a couple of notes (true), or how I know a little bit about a lot of things (also true). For me on the other hand, the difference lies in the setting. You see, when I am at home on the couch or in the car driving, there is zero pressure, I can rattle off answers to Jeopardy or song lyrics with zero impact. Trivia on the other hand is another thing. I'm always afraid I am going to let my team down or end up looking like a moron.
Needless to say, I was feeling pretty nervous when we made our way to the Tipsy Cowboy Bar located on the back roads near the town where we work. Her friend from work managed to pull together a six person team consisting of her, her husband, two of her daughters, @mrsbozz, and myself. We knew very little about the trivia night besides the fact that it was all music trivia.
Despite my confidence, I was still feeling pretty nervous that I was going to muck things up or worst of all let my wife down. She clearly has me on a bit of a pedestal when it comes to trivia and I can't think of anything worse than disappointing her.
I felt a little less nervous when we walked in to find the place was pretty deserted. There were only about three other tables besides our that were full of people. The rest of our group was already there, so we sat down and started chatting before the game started.
The evening started at 7 PM and was broken up into rounds. They had a total of 10 categories, but they knew that they probably wouldn't get through them all. The first one was 70's hits. This is how it worked: They would play a little bit of the beginning of the song and then we had to write down the name and the artist.
If you look at the list above, that was the first round and it's pretty clear many of those songs are absolutely iconic. After this first round we had a feeling this was going to be a cake walk. I soon realized it wasn't going to be obscure songs (which I still know), but more popular ones and the nerves were starting to fade away.
We ended up scoring all the possible points in the first round.
Things were pretty much even score-wise between the four teams after the first round, but the second round is where things got a bit more interesting. The theme of the second round was R&B hits and to be honest, that's where we really started to pull ahead (no thanks to me). @mrsbozz and the two young ladies at the table absolutely killed this category and despite what I am going to write about people saying later, the real credit for this night goes to them.
Not to give you any spoilers, but after this round we had a more than ten point cushion that the other teams were never able to catch up with. We actually got two songs wrong on this. Namely number 2 both the artist and the song, and number 4 we got the name of the song wrong. We still did better than the other country folk at the bar.
Round three was movie songs. As you can see from the list, they were all pretty easy. I did make a fatal error in this round and it's honestly going to haunt me forever. If you look at number 7, you will see the song was La Bamba from the movie La Bamba. Unfortunately, I said it was Richie Vallens who sang it, forgetting the movie version was actually performed by Los Lobos because the movie was about Richie Vallens. Rookie mistake on my part.
This is exactly what is was worried about though. I get so cocky and sure I am right on some things I don't take time to think them through and my hubris gets the better of me.
It's not like the rounds were timed either. They actually went back after playing the songs the first time and replayed any of the ones that people thought they needed to hear again. I thought that was kind of lame and it actually extended the night longer than it had to. They played the intro to the song once, then replayed any of the ones people wanted to hear again, then finally, they played the song a third time when they gave the answers. It was a bit repetitive.
Round four was TV themes and my table was a bit distraught when they heard this was the theme. I told them not to worry, we had this. Actually, this round was supposed to be the last round, but it wouldn't have mattered. It was only worth 10 points and we were already ahead by 12 points, so there was no way the other teams could catch up with us.
By the time they played the first song (The Baywatch Theme in case you can't read it), which I immediately knew, that's when the talk of me being a "ringer" started happening. It wasn't the people at the other tables either, it was actually the person running the trivia night.
I can't help I know what I know!
Needless to say, we got all of the points possible in this round. Sex and the City I knew, but couldn't quite place. Thankfully the youngest lady at our table immediately knew it.
They decided to play one final round because we were moving so quickly through the other rounds. The theme was "hair metal" and unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of our answer sheet. Needless to say, we only got one wrong of the twenty possible points and by then it didn't matter that two of the other teams got them all right. We were the runaway victors with 95 total points. I think that means we only got five wrong for the whole night.
Not bad!
We each got a $10 gift card to the Tipsy Cowboy as our prize. They were announcing the dates for future music trivia nights and the other tables were joking that we weren't allowed to come back. I forgot to mention the name of our team was "We're not good at this", but clearly we were. To be fair, we meant we aren't good at coming up with names for our team, not that we aren't good at trivia.
It actually ended up being a lot of fun and I think we had a really great team with a good mix of old and young that covered a wide range of topics.
Apparently @mrsbozz and her work friend are already scoping out other venues where we can take our team on the road...
Wish us luck!
Hopefully you can do it again soon :) You definitely are good at it!
Thank you! I think we will try to get back at least one more time before the summer.
Sounds like a great night. You are a walking jukebox or ipod or something similar in human form. I would have you examined if I was on the other team. haha
How was the food? I am suprised there is no food pics.
We actually ate at home before we went there. The people we were with got food and it looked pretty good. Someone did say something about making us put our phones on the bar, but one of our teammates said Google comes to them for the answers. It was pretty funny.
That’s funny

Sounds like a fun game! I'd love to give that a shot sometime, though judging by those answers, you got me beat!
We had a good team an the ladies really pushed us ahead with the R&B section.
