Last Resort

When I was a kid, my parents took my sister and I on a two week trip out to the northeast coast of the United States. I've talked about this trip many times over the years here on HIVE because it was probably one of my most favorite trips as a kid. I don't remember all the details, but there are a few things that really stand out to me even 40 years later. I remember clearly one of our stops was a port town called Newport Rhode Island.

My dad had spent some time there when he was in the navy, so he added it as one of the spots we had to visit on our trip. I remember there was a place he used to get amazing seafood from called Mac's Clam Shack. Sadly, it had lost some of the luster that he remembered, and it was more of a dive bar when we visited. While that sounds rather appealing to me in my 50's, at the young age I was back then it was kind of scary.

I also remember all the boats and ships along the harbor along the main street in town. Although I live in the midst of the Great Lakes and boats are nothing special here, being so close to so many ocean faring vessels was a bit different.

Finally, I remember some of the old stone monuments throughout the town and more specifically the giant mansions along the cliff walks. The mansions were built by and for some of the people who moved our country forward via rails, lumbering, steel, and a number of other industries. The mansions are magnificent and if you ever get a chance to take a walk along the cliffs, I highly recommend it.

Clearly since it is Tuesday, the theme of this post today is Rhode Island. After just one "P" state, we move on to the single "R" state in the United States. If you don't recall, for #threetunetuesday sponsored by @ablaze, I have been taking each state in the United States in alphabetical order and picking three songs that have that state name in either the title or lyrics.

This week, was actually a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. They just kind of fell into my lap.

There are times when I know ahead of time what songs I am going to use for a specific post. Then there are other times when I have to do a bit of research to figure out what songs to use. Lyrics.com has been pretty amazing for narrowing down my selections when inspiration doesn't strike me right away. Sometimes I have to do a bit of digging, but then other times like this week, the solution is front and center.

I was able to pick these three songs from the first four songs that were presented to me on the site mentioned above.

If you have been following me for a while, you know I am a pretty big fan of Lana Del Rey. "Fingertips" was an easy one to add to this post, especially after seeing the video for it. I mean, not only is the song amazing, who doesn't want to see Ana De Armis portraying Marylin Monroe. Truly though, Del Rey is just amazing and while I understand people might feel a lot of her songs sound the same, she just has a sound that encapsulates a whole mood for me.

Of course, if you know I like Lana Del Rey, then you probably know I love Taylor Swift. "The Last Great American Dynasty" is a perfect song as it fits really well with the theme I mentioned before of big mansions along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Built by the titans of industry, and holding some of the most extravagant parties you can probably imagine. Actually, I think at one point Swift actually owned a house somewhere along the coast in Rhode Island, but I can't say for sure. I'm not that crazy of a fan. I just appreciate her songwriting ability and her business chops.

Take a listen to those songs if you have never heard them and see if you can pick out the reference to Rhode Island. If you don't like this version Swift's song from Folklore, check out the original version. There are probably about a dozen different versions out there.

Finally, this one is a bit longer, but it's a great song from The Eagles from one of their live shows. While "The Last Resort" wasn't one of their bigger hits, it is still a pretty amazing song. It also is a good reminder of just how awesome of a singer Don Henley is. A lot of you might be most familiar with this song because it is from the Hotel California album.

Hotel California is actually one of my least favorite Eagles songs, but I can appreciate the draw of it and how it has become such a big hit over the years. The Eagles is one of those bands that I really wish I had been able to see them when they were in their prime. I was probably a bit too young though.

I think seeing them today just wouldn't be the same. I mean Vince Gill is great, but it's just not the same.
