Boy Meets Girl

IMG_20190613_181449.jpg

Have you ever had a song that you totally forgot about, then you hear it on the radio and you think "man, this was such a good song". Then by some strange coincidence you hear it again. Then again. Three times in span of just a couple weeks and you seriously haven't heard the song for maybe five years before that.

That happened to me just recently and as soon as it did, I knew that I had to write a post about it for #threetunetuesday sponsored by @ablaze. As I was doing some research for this post, I learned some interesting facts. I happened to throw one of those facts at @mrsbozz last night and she said "where did you learn that?". I told her I read it online. She then asked "what made you even think to look that up?", and I explained to her that it was for a post.

She really should have known. Everything is for a post these days it seems. She was also recently going through some of our cloud storage photos and she asked "why did you take a picture of that?", as if she had to ask. She really should have known it was probably for a post. After seven years it's just a foregone conclusion.

But I digress.

So in case you haven't figured out from the title of this post. My theme for this week is boy meets girl, but it's a quite more literal than you might think. That's right, I am talking about the duet Boy Meets Girl who had some mild success with this little gem back in 1988.

That's right, "Waiting For A Star To Fall" is the song that I hadn't heard in forever and then suddenly I found it popping up everywhere. In fact, it has been so stuck in my head that I have woke up in the middle of the night with the chorus running through my head. I appreciate the fact that it might not be the kind of music that everyone enjoys, but I think it is a really good song.

First off, it has a good beat and a nice tempo that I find quite appealing. Second, I think it actually has some pretty cool lyrics. The way they make some of the rhymes fit together is actually pretty cool. Believe it or not, the inspiration for this song was actually a falling star that Shannon Rubicam had seen at a Whitney Houston concert.

Speaking of Whitney Houston... George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam from Boy Meets Girl actually wrote two of Whitney's biggest hits. "How Will I Know" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" were both written by Boy Meets Girl. In fact, they tried to sell "Waiting For A Star To Fall" to Whitney, but her label didn't want the song. The duo had already had a studio recording of the song for the demo and I guess the rest is history.

The previous song ended up hitting #5 on the US charts and #9 on the UK charts. Sadly, the band didn't have the same level of success after that, but they still had some decent writing credits to their name. Besides Whitney, they also wrote songs for Deniece Williams, Dolly Parton, and Smokey Robinson.

Additionally, their song "Waiting For A Star To Fall" was included on the Three Men and a Little Lady soundtrack which was the follow up to the hit movie Three Men and a Baby.

Waiting For A Star to Fall has also been heavily sampled, but if you want to know more about that, you can check the wiki page.

Believe it or not, the duet is(or was as of 2021) still making music and besides their sophomore album that had the song which was the inspiration for this post, they also released another four albums including their debut in 1985.

"Falling Hard" is one of the singles from their newest EP, and while it is good, for me it just doesn't have the same infectious quality that their biggest hit did. It's not that it isn't a good song. I just can't get past the chorus and the Peter Cetera falsetto that kind of permeates the whole thing. I did take a deep dive into all of their other stuff and I have to admit, it isn't horrible. Their newer stuff has some notes of Jewel, Starship, and maybe a little bit of Fleetwood Mac thrown in, but never quite as good as those I named.

At the very least, I hope I introduced you to something new or gave you a little bit of nostalgia for what was a pretty special era when it comes to music.

That was fun! Boy Meets Girl... I was in high school when that song came out, wow, been awhile! I remember hearing that song in Chile in the early 90's, it was around for awhile. Whitney, great voice, married poorly... She had so much talent!

The last song was good, I had no idea they were still producing music. Good for them! I hope the week is treating you well so far, I saw you were in the podcast earlier too!

Yeah, I figured I should pay attention to what was going on with the curation and stuff like that. It's going to impact a lot of people for good or bad. I still think that hit was their best 😃

That brings back memories for sure. I can remember weekend nights at the skating rink or weekdays at the city pool hearing that as a young teenager.

I never spent much time at the skating rink. I was not coordinated enough and it just wasn't a thing where we lived, even though we have one. It's still there down the road from where I live now.

I wasn’t all that good either. I just hung out for the girls. The one in my hometown closed down a long time ago.

I wake up to the radio every morning, and often I hear songs that I haven't heard for a long time. Most of the time I'm only half awake or sometimes even fall back to sleep then I think what was that I heard, it's so familiar but I can't remember what it was, and that really bugs me

Ah, that would drive me crazy! I hate it when only bits and pieces get stuck in my head like that.

Ah Whitney had some voice. Actually the only one I know from those three tunes today!

That's too bad. The first one is really great. She did have a good voice!

Indeed! It’s rare for me but I’ve definitely heard a song and been like omg! I remember that song! I guess our brains only have so much space and 2 many good songs exist. 🎵

We definitely have no shortage of good songs!
