Almost There!

Given the fact that I haven't been to Massachusetts since I was a little kid, I knew it was going to be a struggle to find photos for this post. Since all of my actual Massachusetts photos are tucked away in a photo album somewhere and were all taken with my Instamatic camera, I didn't think the quality would be that great anyway. Instead, I decided to go through my current photos and pick the most Massachusetts-esque photos I could find. Given what I know about the state from @tattoodjay, it just seemed right that boats would be involved in my photos.

Of course, much smaller boats than the ones that he shares. We are talking about the Great Lakes of Michigan versus the Atlantic Ocean, but I did the best I could with what I had available to me. Sure, I could have sourced some photos from the Internet, but I prefer to use my own photos as much as possible. Perhaps one day I just need to get my old snapshots digitized, then it won't be much of an issue. I should point out, that the majority of my old photos were likely of naval ships from Battleship Cove. As a young boy at the time, I can't think of anything that would fascinate me more than warships.

You get the idea.

So, in case you haven't guessed, this week our musical road trip brings us to Massachusetts. If you are new, each week for #threetunetuesday sponsored by @ablaze I have been working my way through the United States of America in alphabetical order. The three songs I share are required to have the name of the state in either the title or the lyrics. It can't just be a city in the state, it has to be the actual state.

It feels like I have been doing these posts forever, but actually, as you can see from the title, we are only just about halfway through the list. Somewhere between Missouri and Montana or something like that is the halfway point, so we are nearly there.

I figured it would be an absolute travesty if I didn't include this song from the Bee Gees as one of the three songs for this week. Aptly named "Massachusetts", it is one of their slower songs, but still a quite good one. I mean lets be honest, is there anything the Gibb brothers had their hands in that wasn't just pure gold? Even if you can't stand disco music, I would dare you to not nod your head a little bit or tap your foot just a touch when "Stayin Alive" comes on.

Similar to my feelings on ABBA, the Bee Gees were more of phenomenon than just a musical act. They had a lot of talent that was highlighted at just the right time and because of that they have become icons. Of course, when I was doing my research for this week, Massachusetts was the first song that popped up in a Google search, though I knew the song and had already determined I was going to include it anyway. It's not one of their more popular songs, but it did get some significant radio play I think.

I'm a sucker for old music, so when I saw this tune by The Byrds called "Boston", I knew that I needed to include it in this post. I've honestly never heard this song before, but it fits with what I would expect from The Byrds. It's actually interesting to take a deep dive into The Byrds since their biggest hit was actually a Bob Dylan song.

You might be surprised I included this song given the fact that it is clearly about a city in the state of Massachusetts, and more specifically about a girl in that town, but given the fact that it actually names the state, I think it works well for this theme. Listening to this actually makes me realize I might need to take a deep dive into more of the The Byrds work.

Finally, I wanted to include this goofy little tune from The Beastie Boys from their album Hello Nasty. It's called "Dedication" and it clearly mentions Massachusetts towards the end of the "song". I don't even know if you can really call it a song, but it has a pretty cool beat. It's really just one of the guys in the group calling out cities, states, and countries, but it felt kind of fun, so I threw it in this week. To be honest, I don't know a lot of The Beastie Boys work. I know their popular stuff, but I was never a huge fan boy of them like some people my age are.

That doesn't mean I don't appreciate them, it just means I never really took the time to try. I might have to change that when I finish up with The Byrds. Believe it or not, there are quite a few more songs with Massachusetts in the title or lyrics that I thought. It was actually kind of hard narrowing it down to just these three, but there you go. I hope you enjoy!

Don't remember any of the songs, Mrs T was a Beastie Boys fan so am sure she knows that one. Boats, living on the coast I was infatuated with boats, from rowing boats to fishing trawlers to Royal Navy ships, we had naval dockyards not far away, so I would have been snapping away with you lol!

I'd be happy just to have a nice bass boat one day, but I have a feeling it will never happen.

I really enjoyed the way you built this post, blending personal memories, music, and your own photographs. It has such an authentic charm that makes it feel warm and special. The music selection is also really good; “Massachusetts” by the Bee Gees is a beautiful classic, and it was great to see how you connected each song to the theme in such a creative way.

Any time I see a pic with a sailboat mast...I'm hooked :) When you first mentioned Massachusetts, I of course thought of the Bee Gees!

We actually have a big sailing community up this way. Lots of yacht clubs and stuff like that with the Great Lakes.
