44 Weeks

If the cloud wasn't in the way and you squint really really hard, you might be able to see Utah in the photo above. Actually, you probably wouldn't be able to, this photo was taken in Colorado and I am not even sure it is facing West. The fact is, I don't have any photos from Utah because I have never been there myself. Believe it or not, I always seem to forget just how far south Utah is. If I am picturing the United States in my head, I would typically have it sitting much further North than it does. Probably somewhere in the vicinity of Idaho. Funny how our minds work isn't it?

@mrsbozz and I would love to go traveling out West properly at some point but for now we just have our memories of Colorado and how close we almost came to visiting Utah. As you might have guessed, we are continuing our musical road trip through the US for #threetunetuesday sponsored by @ablaze. This is the 44th week I have been doing these posts which means we only have six weeks left and we will have been through all the states, A to Z.

As I was driving to work this morning, I found my mind wandering, and I started thinking about what I am going to do when I finally get to the end of this series. Do I keep moving forward with Three Tune Tuesday posts? The fact is, I have discovered a lot of awesome new bands and songs while I have been doing these posts. I have a list that should get me through a month or two of posts. Then again, part of me feels like taking a break might be in order. I'll have to meditate on that and see what I decide.

While this is far from the shortest song I have ever shared here in these posts, it is one of my most favorite. "Friend of the devil" is a great song by the Grateful Dead that is easily in my top five of their songs. Even better though, there is a cover of this song by Counting Crows that is really great. You can find it on one of their greatest hit compilation albums. This version is actually a lot slower than many of their other versions, but it's still a good song. If anything, it allows you to hear the lyrics a bit better.

Did you catch the reference to Utah? It's right at the beginning of the second verse, so if you missed it, you might want to go back to catch it again. If you do like this song, I highly encourage you to check out one of the other versions I mentioned above. In a previous life, I was definitely a "dead head", even though my generation probably identifies more as Phish Phans.

I'll be the first to admit, that I don't know a ton of stuff by the Pixies. I do know that I enjoy them and "Where is my mind" is one of my favorite songs of theirs. Though it is probably one of their most popular ones in the US, so that makes sense. "Palace of the Brine" on the other I don't think I have heard more than a couple times in the past. Either way, it is a really great song with some interesting instrumentation and it has the reference to Utah that makes it fit into this post.

You actually have to listen really closely to hear the reference to Utah because it happens in one of the sections where the lead singer is screaming versus actually singing. It's there though, I caught it, did you?

Finally, I'm going to slow things down just a bit with a Rod Stewart song. Actually, it's not quite as slowed down as you might expect for Rod Stewart. While he can throw out a ballad with the best of them, he can also rock when he wants to. "The Wild Horse" is a song that fits into that last category quite well. Yes, it has some pop aspects to it, but it also has a driving beat that you might find from someone like Chris Stapleton. Actually, it would be cool to hear Stapleton do a cover of this song. I guess I know what I am going to be doing the rest of the day today... Taking a deep dive into covers of this song.

Rod Stewart is actually one of my favorite artists even though I probably haven't used many of his songs in this series over the past year. "Downtown Train" is probably one of my top 25 favorite songs of all time. The reference to Utah actually comes pretty early in this song and it is much easier to catch than in the previous song. Did you get it? Have you heard this Rod Stewart song before? I don't think I have before this post even though I know a lot of his stuff. I might have to see if I can find this album on vinyl.
