The Road to the WCWS

The stage has been set and we are now on the road to the Women's College World Series. It's actually kind of funny that they don't call the whole thing the WCWS, but apparently that title is only reserved for the final games of the tournament. The earlier rounds are called the Regionals and then the Super Regoinals.

Don't ask me who came up with this stuff.

If you have been following along, you know that the Division II tournament has already started and we are now in the Super Regional round. Today at 11 AM EST, the university I got my bachelors in science degree from SVSU is taking on the University of Indiana in a Super Regional match up.

While the Regional rounds are a double elimination format, the Super Regionals are a best of three game series. That gives SVSU plenty of opportunity to advance to the next stage of the tournament which is the part that is actually considered the Finals in Division II. It's only Division I that gets the designation WCWS.

In the finals, the format shifts back to double elimination for bracket play and then back to best of three for the championship game. Double elimination is interesting because if a team that hasn't lost a single game makes it to the top of their bracket, and the other team beats them, they effectively have to play twice for a winner to advance.

I know, it all sounds pretty complicated right? The key takeaway from this is that at 11 AM today, I am going to be tracking my alma mater to see if they can advance.

Meanwhile, tomorrow the Division I Regionals start at 12 PM EST with USF taking on Auburn and Howard facing Duke. The games continue through the rest of the day. I need to figure out a way to watch the early games. I might have to subscribe to ESPN+ or something like that.

Needless to say, there is going to be a lot of excitement leading up to the final games in a few weeks. If you have never watched softball or given it a shot, this is a great time to get into it.
