The homerun that wasn't

It was a rainy evening in Michigan yesterday when @mrsbozz and I sat down on the couch to watch one of the final games of our nieces high school softball career. I had the game stream pulled up on the TV and we were just finishing up our dinner when the game started.

The top of the first inning went pretty well with the opposing team sending three players to the plate only for them to get retired one, two, three. In previous years, our niece would bat in the second or third spot in the lineup. She is a hitter and that was a pretty good spot for her. The problem is, if the first two batters aren't able to get on base, it doesn't much matter how well she hits in the number 3 spot. This also put her on base for the clean up batter who traditionally bats in the fourth spot.

The idea is, if the first three batters are able to make it onto base, that gives the clean up batter the ammunition they need to get some runs scored.

For some reason this year, the coach decided to move our niece to the number 1 spot in the lineup. I think part of it has to do with her speed. She is really fast, so anything that gets hit after her pretty much ensures she will make it around the bags. In any event, she has settled pretty well into that spot and has been doing great as the lead off batter all season.

Last night was no exception. The bottom of the first inning started and the pitcher threw her first pitch. A ball on the inside of the plate. She got ready, threw her second pitch, and bam... It was gone. It actually happened so fast I missed it. I was doing something on HIVE with my laptop and next thing I know the ball was over the fence. Two pitches in, the already put the hurting on them.

By the third or fourth inning, the game was leaning one way with my nieces team leading 7 to 2. That's when the skies opened up and it started pouring on the field. The officials called the game and the players scurried for the dugouts. We waited to see if they were going to resume play, but ultimately they decided not to.

I'm not sure they are going to make up the game, but the cancellation of the contest also cancelled the home run that our niece hit. Ain't that a load of crap?!

It's okay, I am sure it won't be her last one...

It sounds like she is pretty talented and a blessing for the coach in that she can play in more than batting position!

She is pretty awesome. It took her a little bit to step out of her sisters shadow and really come into her own, but now she is killing it!

That is brilliant, what a talented pair!

It's very unfortunate that the rain canceled the match and the home run went on as if it never happened.
Better Luck next time

Yes, she has plenty of other games this week to make up for it I think. Thank you!
