For several years now, the WWE series has become the FIFA of fighting games, with annual releases seeking to convince players to shell out 80 bucks every few months. This year is no exception. But how does WWE 2 K25 try to do it? It's taking a big risk with The Island, the first open world in the series.
So sit back, grab your soda, and get ready for this analysis I'm about to give you. Let's get started.
Its main new feature is called The Island, "a kind of online semi-open world that's like a theme park set in the WWE universe." This is where a peculiar story mode takes place, complete with ghosts and a whole Roman Reigns enios. Open this Island to award a WWE contract to the winner of a curious competition. Now, this is where the multiplayer aspect comes in. This mode can have up to 50 players per room.
Although we can only fight with them at specific points on the map, we cannot interact with them or anything in the scenario. This sounds a bit Pay to Win, at least as far as other players are concerned. In the campaign against the AI, we won't have this problem, despite how well-designed its scenarios are and how entertaining this mode undoubtedly is.
But don't be discouraged because fortunately, the rest of WWE 2K25 is a marvel, even the seemingly minor new features make it shine compared to its previous installment. The game has new content for all the usual modes. The main single-player options remain the Showcase and Myrise.
Showcase Mode: The Bloodline:
MyRise Mode:
As if all this were not enough, the My Universe, My Faction, and MyGM modes also incorporate some changes and improvements. We can now play online with up to four players in MyGM, and promos return to My Universe. If you have played them in other editions, you can get an idea of the number of hours they can offer and how much they benefit from all these small additions.
In short, despite the disappointment with myisland, which still has a chance of redemption, WWE 2 K25 surpasses last year's installment in every aspect. It offers an almost incomprehensible amount of cosmetics to unlock for practically infinite duration, a combat system with more possibilities than ever, and tremendously fun single-player modes. Once again, this is a true must-have for fans of the brand. We'll see how 2K surprises us next year, because the truth is that they're finding it increasingly difficult to surpass themselves.
